Low-carb diets

Head ache OMG

I've been low carbing for a week, prob about 40g of carbs a day, I've lost almost 3kg and notices my stomach is a lot flatter. After day three I had a really sore throat, that's now gone and been replaced with a mighty headache.

Generally I eat some full fat yoghurt with a few almonds plus a scrambled egg and mackerel for breakfast, either fish or chicken with Mayo and pesto plus some veg (green pepper or broccoli) for lunch and evening meal is chicken breast with lots of broccoli or salad with olive oil or mayo. For a snack I have some yoghurt or 0carb pastrami.

I'm drinking about 2-3 litres of water a day and carrying on my normal fitness programme of swimming for 90min or running for 40min each day (one or the other, not both).

I have two questions, the sore throat and headache, are they normal?

Does this diet sound ok?

Wowsers, I just did a 5k and it was horrific. I'm not in the uk and it's hot and humid here but still I've seldom felt so awful. Very very tired and dizzy. Help!

Sore throat is nothing to do with low carbing! But the headache is likely to be.

Drink plenty of water and eat lots of fat. You need sodium, potassium and magnesium, so:

Cook with salt and add it to your food, and try drinking a hot drink made with Oxo, Marmite or Bovril. Eat salmon, spinach, avocado and full fat natural yoghurt.

Exercise will be really hard until you have switched your body from carb burning to fat burning, which will take around 2-4 weeks.

Good luck!

Don't suffer though - take some paracetamol!

But not ibuprofen if you can help it.

Headache finally gone. Stayed the same weight over the weekend which has annoyed me but it could be worse!

Already done 3l of water today and been for a swim. I feel full of energy so going for a run soon the energy will last until about 60sec into my run and the constipation Blush seems to be getting better. Hurrah.

What have you tried for the constipation? I find 1000mg of Vit C sorts me out!

Just drinking lots. And lots. It seems to have sorted itself. I'm not in the uk so it's difficult to try much else!

It can take up to 2 weeks to fully adapt to a low carb diet. So don't give in just yet. Plenty of water, plenty of salt and flax seed for the ...ahem...toilet issues.
