Remind me of the veg I shouldn't be eating?Carrots?
Sweet potato?
Peas?
Help. smile

EvaTheOptimist Sat 04-Jan-14 22:16:50

Whoever was asking about veg, the carbs per 100g are on one of the tabs of this spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmNIskihgXotdFVPcF9zWUhIal9BbTl5SnlTM3BlWVE#gid=3

The idea is to focus on those veg which are 3 grams per 100g or less:

IPD is Idiot-proof diet, by India Knight and Cerys somebody - its a similar low-carb-high-fat diet. They wrote a book that I can recommend, about the "journey" of trying to stick to low-carbing and how well it worked for them. There's also an idiot-proof diet cookbook.

On the orange extract - I guess it depends how many carbs per 100 grams the label says it has, bearing in mind the 3grams ideal - as you wouldn't be using much I'd think single figures would probably be OK, but its really up to you.

whodunnit Sat 04-Jan-14 22:25:31

I second buying the idiot proof diet book.it is very readable n straightforward.

popsnsqeeze Sun 05-Jan-14 00:02:19

I'd like to join too. I don't have a ton to lose, but because I'm short and small boned every extra pound is noticeable. Have about a stone.
Is there a guideline to follow?

Ok, I found the rules! Looks doable!
Question, what about lentils? Aren't lentils and other pulses proteins?

Thanks!

bumbumbee Sun 05-Jan-14 02:10:19

Can I join please? I've done lc before and lost a stone but had a wedding dress to fit in so had a break as I'd had it taken in already, 1 month since the big day and I'm ready to get back on it.

Yes the IPD book is excellent, although I do find them to be annoyingly bossy but I guess that's India Knight for you. They also follow the concept that once you've lost the weight you need to reintroduce most carbs in moderation, which is counter to what a lot of low-carb afficionados would say since the whole point for some people is that once you start eating carbs again, the addiction rears its ugly head and it's nigh on impossible to keep on eating "sensibly" without piling on the weight.

FourArms Sun 05-Jan-14 08:51:41

Bit confused by cabbage being so high in carbs... I eat lots of cabbage & leek (Tesco prepack) and the bag says:

Typical Values: Carbohydrate
100g contains: 3.4g

Typical Values: Fibre
100g contains: 2.6g

Is this OK? I probably eat 150g at a time.

LauraBridges Sun 05-Jan-14 09:12:03

if it's 3.4 then that's only 5g and if you are keeping under about 20g it should be fine. I hate it so never had to look into it whereas have spinach with butter every day.

Lentils and the pulses I think are out unless you can keep them to a carb level of under about 25g. I am not a vegetarian however so never had to look into those in much detail either and again don't like them. I was the little girl who first wanted the fat off the chicken and then the flesh , then the veg and left the carb - potato - until last as least favourite so all this is fairly dead easy for me.

kasbah72 Sun 05-Jan-14 09:31:12

Yes please. I have about 3 stone to lose which is, frankly, horrific.
I have a big event on valentines weekend. That will be my first main goal. Is a stone realistic or insane ? I am going to start this Thursday.

StuntNun Sun 05-Jan-14 09:48:32

Helium that idea of introducing more carbs at maintenance weight comes from Atkins where there is a 'carb ladder' that you introduce one rung at a time until your weight is stable.

TrickyWoo Sun 05-Jan-14 10:10:37

Weighed this morning... 3lb off since Thursday!! Amazing!

AthelstaneTheUnready Sun 05-Jan-14 10:10:47

I started early, since I couldn't bear the drag anymore (sorry BIWI!). Don't own any scales and don't think I've lost much/any weight in the last week, but am pleased to report my stomach is flat again <whoop>, I am bouncing out of bed in the morning, and my SKIN... my God, my skin. I have to keep going to the bathroom to check again. It's soft and clear and all the pores have shrunk. I look about ten years younger confused.

I am NEVER going back to sugar.

FourArms Sun 05-Jan-14 10:43:22

Kasbah - if you're not watching what you eat at all right now, drink alcohol and have had a fairly indulgent Christmas then I don't think a stone by Valentines Day is impossible. I lost 1 stone and half a pound on SW (red days so low ish carbs) in 6 weeks.

Having said that, I'd be starting today with cutting out rubbish and things like bread, pasta, rice etc so you don't have a horrific shock on Day 1 of bootcamp.

What sort of BMI would 3 stone take you to? I want to lose between 21 - 30lbs. This would see me (30lbs) at the top of a healthy BMI and a size 12 (or I was last time I was that weight). But according to BMI the middle of healthy for my height is 9 stone exactly which I think for me would be unrealistic and non-maintainable.

LauraBridges Sun 05-Jan-14 11:01:21

Best to start with aiming for something attainable otherwise people get discouraged so that sounds wise. i think I am just under 10 stone - daren't get on the scales in case they show a 10 (I'm not very tall) and feel best just under 9 although closer to 8 stone is probably when I look best so if I can lose a stone that will be great. If I lose 2 perfect.

I ended up buying lots of nuts and raisins yesterday when something went wrong in the middle of the day with the children, came home, ate them all, felt absolutely stuffed and had cheese and cream and I get so annoyed that that makes me slightly ill - nose runs immediately. My body hates dairy products (I never have milk) so I am going to have to resist nuts and raisins (raisins are just sugar anyway ) and keep off the cheese and probably cream as they are my over eating binge products (I already gave up sugar for a very long while and fruit). I never binge eat on meat or eggs or fish or veg. I am sure I also have PMT so that won't help at the moment.

bumbumbee Sun 05-Jan-14 11:16:22

Can someone help me please I'm struggling with drinks, im drinking water which I really don't like and there's no way I can drink tea or coffee without sugar or sweetener, is there anything else that I can try for some variety?

StuntNun Sun 05-Jan-14 11:26:41

Herbal tea or simple hot water.

FourArms Sun 05-Jan-14 11:35:14

Coffee with cream?

Water with a squeeze of lemon juice or some slices of cucumber?

Sparkling water?

Herbal tea bags in cold water?

I'm going to struggle with water too. I've got an app on my phone now to count how many glasses I have a day and hoping that will help.

BIWI can I ask a quick question as I'm doing my online shop today. Is the reason for limiting processed foods like bacon and smoked salmon because they are bad for us or because they hinder weight loss? I'm not sure whether to buy any of these in the first two weeks?

DurhamDurham Sun 05-Jan-14 11:46:41

I haven't had any past, bread, potatoes or rice since 20th Dec. however giving up less obvious carbs is going to be a struggle for me. I was at a garden centre yesterday and ate the biggest Peach Melba cream cake I have ever seen. Felt sick afterwards but I know it won't stop me eating another one in t he future.

Not sure how much I weigh as have been obsessed in the past but since the 20th Dec I have changed shape, my legs and tummy are less bumpy and look more toned. I really hope that I will be able to cut out the carbs and make a long term change to the way I eat.

LauraBridges Sun 05-Jan-14 11:48:15

I used do think I could never drink only water but for 3 or 4 years now that is all I drink. It only takes a few weeks to get used to a new habit so just stick with water and you'll find you adjust to it fine after a while.

I do have bacon sometimes and it often has things added to it and is not so healthy as pure foods. Check it has no sugar on the packet or sugar equivalents. Waitrose only sell in our store one brand of smoked salmon which has no sugar added for example. However bacon and smoked salmon for those who can afford it is going to be much better for you than bread and sweets so I would not worry about it too much.

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 05-Jan-14 11:52:03

Blimey - what a long list!

Signing in too, even though am crap at the cooking meals part. Actually thinking of starting tomorrow.

Thanks lovely BIWI

bumbumbee Sun 05-Jan-14 12:05:04

Thanks everyone I'll try the suggestions, I've started cutting out bread rice pasta and potatoes but I know I'm still having too many carbs, had a huge headache yesterday and I Know it was because I didn't drink enough. 20 lb to go!
