Low-carb diets

No diet drinks on bootcamp - I CANNOT DO IT.

But if the label on the drink is only 1.1g of carbs per 100ml then why can't I have it, why why WHY?!?!?!

Even if there is any truth to the 'your body reacts to artificial sweetener as it does to sugar' thing, then surely a tiny little bit like that won't matter, will it? If I can have sausages with 2g of carbs then why can't I have a diet fizzy drink with fewer carbs?

Has anybody successfully lost weight at bootcamp/bootcamp light whilst still drinking Diet drinks?

How about fizzy water and fresh lime juice? Or lemon juice

You're a grown woman, you can drink what you like. You're not going to drink 100ml though, are you ? A can is 330ml, or a little bottle 500ml, that's 3.3g or 5.5g, even if you don't get stuck into a 2l bottle and guzzle 22.2g. If it's not booze then I can't bear to drink carbs I could be eating, seems like a waste.

Honestly? You can probably still lose weight having diet drinks as long as it doesn't lead you to also eat or drink sweet things with calories. What you won't get though is how good you feel when you break the addition to sweetness and when your tastebuds aren't blunted by constant exposure to artificial sweetness. When I'm in the zone with low-carbing, a cherry tomato or a bit of red pepper seems ludicrously sweet, and I totally lose my taste for sugar.

Everything MsRinky says.

Plus sweeteners are full of horrible chemicals which aren't good for you.

Well of course, but what I meant was "can I drink it and still make the diet work?" :)

Very good point about not only drinking 100ml though, I hadn't thought of that :(

Goodasitgets, I did think about fizzy water & lime juice but thought that would be too carby.

I cant survive college without my caffeine fix of diet coke Blush

I think a squirt of lime/lemon (chuck the actual fruit in too) would be better than diet drinks. Add sparkling water and loads of ice and its thirst quenching

Um because aspartame spikes your blood sugar, gives you brain tumours, wrecks your internal organs and poisons you?

I've lost almost 10lb in 2 weeks and I have one sweetener in my copious cups of tea (which I drink with skimmed milk!) and have a bit of a diet coke habit.

I know I should stop but tea with nothing in it tastes like absolute shit.

PassTheTwiglets · 10/09/2013 19:25

No evidence (other than anecdotal) whatsoever for any of that, Cairngorms, though of course you are right that it's not a healthy thing to consume.

Methe, are you low-carbing?

I will tryt he lemon then, goodasitgets, thanks!

Yes but not really bootcamping, my names not on the list as I would be breaking the rules almost immediately.

My DH lost a bit of weight low carbing and having artifical sweeteners. He's always hungry though. Whereas low carbing without, I'm only hungry occasionally and not that about-to-fall-over hunger, just an awareness I could do with a meal.

If I an give up 10 cups of milky tea a day, you can jack in diet coke.

I lost 2 1/2 stone and dropped from a 14 to an 8 by eating virtually nothing and drinking diet coke and coffee. so of course you can. it's about calories in vs calories out. not to say that's a very healthy way to do it though.

OP what about soda with a wedge of lime in?? The craving will go for coke etc and eventually you wont even like the taste, honestly Smile

Report
PassTheTwiglets · 11/09/2013 14:37

It's not the sweetness I'm craving, it's the fizz. I had some sparkling water with lemon in and that definitely stopped me craving Coke - thank you! Wondering how much I can really drink though, what with there being carbs in lemon juice... I've been having about a teaspoon of lemon juice per pint of water, that's going to add up.

pass try using fresh limes and lemon as you should not have juice on a low carb diet. I find it tastes just as nice, or just plain old sparkling water Smile

Huh? The juice from a fresh fruit is different to the juice from a bottle? Confused

I dont squeeze the fruit just add it in as a wedge, but yes from the bottle is different.

PassTheTwiglets - it's up to you

The reason I say no artificial sweeteners on Bootcamp is three-fold:

  1. Trying to encourage everyone to eat as 'clean' as diet as possible - avoiding things that are unnecessarily processed and chemical.

  1. Breaking our 'addiction' to sweet things

  1. Because there is some suggestion that the sweetness/sweeteners can impede weight loss

It's up to you whether or not you want to abide by (1) - that won't impact on your weight loss. But (2) and (3) may.

But as others have said - you're a grown woman.

And it's called Bootcamp for a reason Grin

Oh, and if it's just the fizz that you're missing, then I really, actually, don't understand your issue - plenty of fizz in a bottle of sparkling water!

I know what you mean about missing the fizz. I don't usually drink carbonated mineral water, but something about fasting makes me want to drink something fizzy. More filling because of the bubbles? Or is it because it feels like a small treat?

ZingWantsCake · 11/09/2013 15:03

pass

to add insult to injury fizzy drinks even fizzy water is really bad for the CO2 bonds with the calcium in your bones and and weakens them.

a fast way to osteoporosis that is!
my advice is to avoidall fizzy drinks.

tap, filtered or mineral water are so much better, add slices of lime, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, orange, blood orange or cucumber for a little taste and "colour"
or a combo of them

my favourite is tangerine, lime and cucumber.

Report
BIWI · 11/09/2013 15:11

I haven't found any proof for that Zing - can you post something that supports that?

Frankly my view has always been that if I'm giving up everything else that I used to drink, I'm damned if I'm going to give up the fizz in my water!
