Low carb and boot camp.

I've been on boot camp about two weeks and I'm totally shattered after running about 5k. I can normally manage 8or 9! Is this the carb flu i've heard tell about or is there anything I can eat that might help? I succumbed to a banana this morning and felt instantly better.

hi Rhubarbcrumbled yes and no Smile
You're still adapting to this way of eating and until your leto adapted (body learns to take its fuel from fat) its going to be a bit rocky, you're going to suffer from a drop off in pace and energy for the next few weeks, but then you'll start to see a marked improvement.
The banana was a big no no as its sugary and massively carby, you really really need to stick with it and have faith in this way of eating.
My running has gone through the roof from the weight loss and practically constant energy. 'don't want to show off but saturday morning I ran 13K on a cup of coffee'.

Glad to hear it's a temporary thing! It was just a bit soul destroying that I'd lost weight and was feeling pretty good on the diet but couldn't actually run. I'll stick with it. Any tips on good foods to eat post run? Normally I'd have a banana pre run then porridge and fruit after...obviously not an option now!

And I've just realised the title is a bit weird and was meant to read 'exercise and boot camp'. Gah.

Morning Rhubarb, its really odd not to have the energy, I know exactly how you feel, I had no stamina in my legs with pace / heart rate all over the shop. It took me about 5 weeks before I started to really go again but then my times improved and runs became stronger.

Food is a bit of a tricky one, soon your not going to be hungry after your run. I'd suggest moving your runs beside meals and eat afterwards, also up your water intake by a couple of pints more on running days. I normally run mornings so I go out on coffee fumes and come back for breakfast.

If you find your feeling ruff (post run or carb flu) then drink an oxo cube, brings your levels back up. And make sure your drinking your water
