Any suggestions please? We want to go somewhere other than Disney for our next holiday (which we loved but don't want DC to think this is the only holiday we do!) . DC will be 6 and 4. Couldn't spend more than couple of days at the beach and we are not terribly sporty. Ideally somewhere with quite a few things to see or do.
I keep showing up on these threads to suggest Los Angeles.
There is the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens that has a children's garden and educational conservatory that is great for 4 - 6 year olds. Nearby in Pasadena is Kids' Space. The Getty Center has a family room that is perfect for this age group. The Natural History museum downtown quite often has talks about animals aimed at young children. There is the Los Angeles Zoo and the Griffith Park Observatory in Griffith Park. There are the beaches. The less crowded beaches are North of Los Angeles at either Leo Cabrillo or Carpenteria (be very careful of rip tides however). Los Angelenos tend to go to Zuma Beach and that gets completely crowded with zero parking on the weekends. There is Venice Beach which is deserted during the week but a bit eye opening on weekends. The Long Beach aquarium is worth a visit and it is across the marina from the Queen Mary. If you go at the right time of year you can go whale watching.
There are the Warner Brothers studios for a real working studio tour and Universal Studios for a theme park. There is also Knott's Berry Farm for Snoopy themed rides and Six Flags Magic Mountain (for large roller coasters and gang members), there is even Raging Waters water park. There is hiking in the mountains and on quite a few beaches you can rent bicycles or roller blades. At Santa Barbara you can also rent four seat bicycle carts that you can ride along the bike path. There is a good zoo at Santa Barbara as well and a craft fair along the beach front on Sunday mornings. There is a carousel and ocean themed adventure playground across the street from the craft fair.
