Sri Lanka with 4 and 7 year olds?

The school our children attend (or will attend for ds2!) is having an extra week on the October half term so we were thinking of taking the opportunity to get a bit of winter sun.

DH thought Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat due to flight times but it looks like hotels and activities there are really expensive and I don't know if it's interesting enough to justify the cost!

Sri Lanka is a long flight (furthest we've taken both children is Italy!) but maybe we could stop in Dubai for a night or two on the way to break the journey. It looks like it's cheaper to stay there, and maybe cheaper for activities?

Has anyone taken younger children there? What sort of activities did they like. Ds1 would probably enjoy a bit of snorkelling and maybe animal watching but ds2 might find those less interesting grin.

What are costs there like? Is it easy and cheap to go on tours? Can you hire a car with driver? Best areas to stay? Any good travel agents for this sort of trip?
