Hi, I need to rant a bit sorry! Have been separated for over 2 years and about to start divorce proceedings. The main disagreement is over the "family home" which me and dd are still in; we need to sell it, as I can't afford to keep it up on my salary, and I need to get somewhere I can afford on my own. However, we agreed that it needed work to sell it and the estate agent suggested some key things, most of which I've had done over the last couple of years and paid for on my credit card . There's only a few things left and one of those is replace the hall landing and stairs carpet as the last one was disgusting and stank of cats pee (don't ask) so I ripped it up when I had the hall landing and stairs decorated. However, I really really don't want to put anything more on my credit card plus I think that as it's still half his house, he should contribute to the doing-up-to-sell costs.
I found out this morning when he came to collect dd that he's just had new carpets put down in several rooms in the house he's now in (which was his anyway but he'd been letting it out). I'm really cheesed off as I DO want to sell this place and move on but I can't afford to fund anything more.
Hrmph. What do I do? We have a meeting with mediation solicitor in a couple of weeks so I'm likely to bring it up there (not whinging specifically about the carpet but the fact that he should help if he wants the place to sell).
I'm not expecting any replies to this totally innane thread but writing it down has helped

i think you have to keep record of all your expenditures, and once the house is sold, and things are being shared you have to deduct such expenses, if he doesnt agree go to a solicitor.
what do you think?

I dont know but its so annoying when they wont make an effort. When I split with ds's dad I moved out and he moved back in with his gf, when it came to selling the house he wouldn't do anything to make it look better (He'd pretty much trashed it). I did tell him but he just said "so what, its a new house...doesn't matter what it looks like, someone will buy it"...doesn't quite work like that though does it!

Hi, thanks for the replies, I'd not thought about sanding andpoliching the stairs, bit worried theyd be even more slippy dd has stubbed her toe and slipped a couple of times. I did the living room floor (well, got a friendly fireman I know to do it for me!) and it looks lovely. A friend suggested painting in a few inches fromn the skirting on the stairs and getting a stair runner, might do that.
And yes thanks for the comments on keeping receipts, I've got them all somewhere., i'll dig them out and work it all out. I was just pissed off earlier at him swanning off and getting a few carpets fitted when I can't! Grrrrrrrr......... It was me that dumped him tho, so I continually remind myself of that to make myself feel better!!!!!

well call in the fireman to paint the stairs then!!
and yes i think i may well start keeping receipts too so i can claim back for all the little expenses that i've had maintaining my house whilst it's been on the market

there is another point aimeesmummy,
you adding value to the house, which i think is your share, dont forget that.
i mean think of the value of the house without nothing been done, and the value of the house after all your efforts and expenses, i think this will be amount youre entitled to, too. because he didnt do anything to increase the value of the house.
