I personally find the idea of going away at Christmas awful.. (not that it means everyone else does)

I have been on my own with DS since he was a baby. We now have lots of traditions. we always make gingerbread house on christmas eve, we never have turkey but a roast dinner with all the trimmings, tiramsu for pudding , we chill out. I slept last christmas day as son had been so hyper on run up to the day he had barely slept so I was shattered. we really enjoy our day where I think if we were somewhere else I imagine people viewing us as poor them where we love our day.

Hi Molly, hmm don't have any amazing ideas, as I think most holiday places bump up their prices at Christmas so you'd end up paying through the nose for something average. I understand how you feel. We are fortunate to have family to see on Christmas day, but I do always find the Christmas holidays generally hard with the kids, as friends usually have OHs off work and do stuff with family, plus its harder to get out and about in the cold dark weather.

I think Starlight's ideas are good - make your own traditions. And try and get out for a walk before lunch or something to break up the day. Maybe you could pop to a friend's for teatime drinks and cake? I think lots of families would be grateful for a bit of a distraction on Christmas day when tempers are wearing thin...

Why not go somewhere nice before Christmas so when everyone is going on about about their lovely Christmas you can say ...well we went to Oaris, Barcelona etc.
Don't do Christmas markets and they such like but a cool off peak break. Barcelona was lovely. All the Decs up and Christmas markets but as they don't celebrate till 6th Jan it's not manic. Lots if fresh stuff in the markets ( non of the horrid panic buying queues and empty shelves here) and lots to see and do. Can you tell I loved it!

Then you can kick back and relax on Christmas Eve/Day.

Hi Molly. Last New Year's Eve we went to a hotel in Plymouth (www.elfordleigh.co.uk/?content=hotel). I think we paid 200 pounds for 5 people + plus our puppy, including a gala dinner. It is a really nice golf hotel, with swimming pool and gym, squash... I think for 3 people you could get it for around 150... it worth to call them. Good luck
