We are thrilled to launch the Glasgow branch of the Positive Birth Movement. (www.facebook.com/positivebirthmovement w
This is a grassroots movement of discussion groups that support and uphold a woman's right to positive and empowered birth experience. The movement was started in response to One World Birth's "Freedom For Birth" documentary which explored issues around birth and human rights. The movement aims to encourage discussion groups across the world and link them via social media to create a community of support, information and resources.
What is Positive Birth? "A positive birth means a birth in which a woman feels she has freedom of choice, access to accurate information, and that she is in control, powerful and respected. It should also be a birth that she approaches, perhaps with some trepidation, but without fear or dread, and that she then goes on to enjoy, and later remember with warmth and pride. A positive birth does not have to be natural or drug free it simply has to be informed from a place of positivity as opposed to fear. The Positive Birth Movement is woman-centred and as such respects a womans human right to choose where and how she has her baby."
Our group hopes to begin in January and meet monthly thereafter. There will be no leader per se but groups will be facilitated by Mathilde Mazau, a mother of two and Debbie Armour, mother of three and doula. In the future it may be that we could invite guest speakers on topics that are of particular interest; we welcome your feedback on this. We are also very happy to have the support of Dr Clare Willocks OB and Lucy Trend at The Shiatsu Loft (www.shiatsuloft.co.uk facebook.com/theshiatsuloft)
The format of the group is very loose at this stage and we hope to evolve in direct response to feedback from those who are attending or wish to attend. We hope to have space for discussion of specific issues eg, breech birth, homebirth, induction but we would also like to create space for safe sharing of birth stories and issues around loss. The topic for the month ahead will be announced here in advance. Above all, regardless of format or topic, the group will always be a safe and respectful space, free from judgement, where women can share together in honesty and openness.
The group is aimed at connecting pregnant women with each other and other mothers and we welcome all mothers and their supporters in birth eg midwives, doulas and other practitioners who work with women and families.
The group will always be free to attend but we would welcome small donations towards room hire and refreshments.
Please use the FB group to suggest topics, share relevant articles and resources, continue discussions and just to connect with other women. The FB group will be "closed" and we should treat any discussion here with the same notions of safety and respect we would the meetings.
