I mentioned it on another thread and suddenly thought, ah, Mumsnet local!!

My allotment is in Shirehampton and I really don't want to give it up but between my toddler and baby and trying do get our flat together enough to put it on the market, I really don't have any time to get there and probably won't for some time.

My neighbours up took on a bit of it over the summer when I was too pg/post pg to do anything to stop the allotment police getting on my case but I don't want them to feel like they have to carry on.

So if there is anyone who is maybe thinking about allotmenting and wants to try it out for a season or is on a waiting list and wants to get started early, I have land to use! I will continue paying the fees so no money is needed and I will put some trust out there with a key to the shed and use of my tools.

Hi MrsW. So sorry to hear you might lose your allotment. The allotment police took ours last year in similar circs - particularly annoying as we'd actually just got back on top of it.

We kept holding 'allotment parties' where I'd rope in vaguely interested work colleagues to come and dig the thing over in exchange for lunch (massive veggie chillies, eaten out of mugs between diggings). I had hoped that it would get people enthusiastic enough to want to come and share ours, but the only people who took to it went and got a whole one each.

Maybe you could try and get people involved that way?

Thank-you for replying! I'd stopped checking this thread as I'd kind of given up hope.

I'm currently a SAHM so no work colleagues to call on. My friends who were helping me when I first got it about two and a half years ago are now in the same position as me (with babies, that is) and so can't really do anything either.

Unfortunately, my DP has always let me know he's not interested in helping, so no luck there either.

Oh well, hopefully this bump might bring something... <hopeful smile, pity me, pity me>

Ah well, good luck. You could just arrange lots of onions from the shop so it looks like they're growing.

Or write labels like you've planted stuff, even if you haven't.

Does that much really need to be done to it over the winter to keep the allotment police off your back?
I'm in Bristol and could do bits and pieces to help you out, but have to warn you I really know very little about gardening...!

You don't need to know much about gardening to dig. It's mostly weeds right now and some dead/dying off stuff that was planted early in the year to make it look good.

Did you have any luck finding a willing digger? I'm in a similar position to you (baby and toddler), but love the idea of an allotment and might be able to help a bit..?
