Remember the Shopping torlley thread? I found a list in a trolley in France today and thought I would share it with you.

On yellow paper

lasagnes

viade láiléu (I think, no idea what that could be, is it meat? Beef?)

gryre gruyére (she can't spell it either) yummy Swiss cheese

créme

Seperate to the first list, which makes me suspect that she was going to a different shop was:

• citron confits [something lemony]

• pistou (what is that? Pistachio nuts?)

• 1/2 chou voit ??

• pignone ???

ooooh! I found one the other day in my local small supermarket. It wasn't very exciting for me, but I suppose it sheds a light on Spanish culinary habits.

Let's see, it went something like:
pan de molde (what I'd call plastic bread - you know, white sliced)
leche x 4 (milk - we buy it UHT in cartons so it's v easy to store at home)
jamón york (this is what they call boiled ham, as opposed to jamón serrano which is cured)
mortadela (do we call it mortadela in English? That pork and olive sausage stuff that is always bright pink)
queso barra (cheese slices from the deli counter)
mistol (washing up liquid)
lentejas (lentils)
galletas maría (similar to rich tea biscuits - a breakfast staple)
galletas digestive (digestive biscuits, again breakfast or snack staple)
pescado ¿gallos? (fish - John Dory?)
ajos (garlic)

I think we can conclude from this that this is a mid-week top-up shop, to buy sandwich ingredients and lunch for today, plus a few odds and sods.

If anyone found my lists they'd know they were mine! They're written on the backs of envelopes that I stick to the cork board in the kitchen and add to as and when inspiration hits. And inspiration can come in any language.

My current on-going list reads:
tinned toms
papel cocina
lentejas
patatas
jerusalem artichokes
MILK
yogur
cereales
toothbrush

I suspect the lady who wrote my list was having a dinner party, and making lasagne

Lol at your Spanish/English list, mine are easily recognisable too. A strange mix of German and English.

Mme Lindt, have no revelations, but am very curious about what kind of meat viade láiléu is and what 1/2 chou voit (half a car cabbage??? ) could be. Hoping someone very worldly will come on and enlighten us.
I think she was planning something Mediterranean as well as the lasagne:

• citron confits = preserved lemons
• pistou = pesto
• pignone = pignons de pin = pine nuts

How d'you know it was a woman? With spelling like that....

The writing was feminine so I guess it was a woman. It may have been the loopy writing that is confusing. Not sure if I copied it right. Sounds like a yummy meal.
