So can you get golden syrup or equivalent in Germany?

see here

Need foolproof or finknottle-proof recipes for flapjacks.
Have tried making them before the dc weren't impressed and I had to throw them away

Beginning to wish I hadn't offered. Had a meeting with the head yesterday about the project and he said, "Oh good, will you make shortbread?"
Ha, my shortbread could re-surface roads

I know what you mean about the dc not being impressed! Had that too, and I found plenty of recipes that worked without syrup! Made a tray of flapjack last summer for the school festival and it did not go down that well because they didn't recognise it and when I wasn't there to explain what it was they just didn't touch it as if it was some sort of foreign mistake.

could you try Ruebenmuss - it's in the jam aisle, in a yellow cardboard tub. Dark syrup made from sugar beets with a consistency similar to golden syrup, but very malty flavour (I'm not sure whether that's good or bad TBH)

I'll have a look geekgirl, thanks. Exactly the detailed instructions I need. If it's unsuitable I can always creosote the shed with it

Now is that the third aisle on the left after the Dr Oetker cake mixes?

Simply aisles and miles away from the "84 things you need with dinkel in them"

You can use cheap runny honey instead of golden syrup.

Well I do, anyway, and it doesn't come out any different.

There's lovely honey here - we have discovered a Wildblueten one I could almost drink.

Will report back stickily after the weekend.

Are you anywhere near an army base? We have special supermarkets with all the English stuff imported in. They definitely have golden syrup in ours.

We're in the American Zone

Will try honey.

If we had access to UK stuff I'd just get beans and do beans on toast...
