good job on the work that you're doing. Running a charity is not easy.

Here are the contacts, I hope this will help you.
Paccom (in Hanoi)
Robin (in Hoi An) She also has a charity for disabled children. She's registered with PACCOM, so if you need to contact her, get some info from PACCOM. Her charity is called Children's Hope in Action.
Sr Van Nga Le (Thich Ngat Hanh School for the Blind) in HCMC
There's a cafe that employs deaf people in Da Nang. I can't remember the name though. If you go to Da Nang, I'm sure you can ask a local to direct you to it.
There is also an NGO in Hue called Hue Help. I believe they are based in the UK.
Kirk Horton is based in Thailand. You can contact the Bangkok School for the Blind.
Sabriye Tenberken (Braille Without Borders) She's in Tibet and India. She had a rough time too for the same reason, no one believed her and she had to deal with a lot of red tape. She's famous now, you're going to be famous too one day. Don't let people stop you from what you want to accomplish. I think what you have done is very brave.

It's ok to make mistakes as long as you learn from them. The real idiots are the ones who can't admit to their mistakes or keep making them.

BE PROUD OF YOURSELF! I love the name of your charity, btw.

Have you tried contacing the Rotary or Lion's Club? You could also try these organisations in Malaysia and Singapore.

You could put an article in the paper as well. You'd have to ask a Vietnamese to do this for you though as foreigners are prohibited from placing articles.

I would have suggested contacting some local churches, but I think you would have more luck in Malaysia or Singapore.

Have you thought about asking any of the big hotels for help? Don't go to a hotel with a Vietnamese GM though. They think differently and I think it would be harder for you to get your message across.

The more connections you have, the better.

Good job sweetheart.

You could contact some other NGOs and ask them to assist with funding.

I'll post some more ideas later.

I can confirm that Gabby is doing what she is. In fact, her project is in full swing and has been for quite a while.

Gabby, don't worry about what other people tell you. You are a very clever girl and you have supporters.

Gabby, btw, has lived in 8 countries. She certainly is a globetrotter.

Gabby, you have my full support! I think you're doing a wonderful thing. To have done what you have at 24 years old, is remarkable. I agree with soakinginwine. You'll probably be the next Helen Keller.

I too would like to say how well Gabby is doing.

I bet she'll win the Nobel one day. Some people spend their lives sitting on their backsides twirling their thumbs.

What an incredible young lady. She has been on TV twice already in Asia and is highly admired (at least by the foreignrs).

Like everybody else, this may be only my first or second post ever, but I would like to add my support too.

Gabby, I'm so very proud of you! You set up an NGO in a communist country where the living conditions and people are completely different. You are a very brave and strong young lady.

I'm sorry I'm still confused, the charity is apparently registered in Florida, but I couldn't find it.

She's been on TV twice, but still no mention of her, or her charity anywhere online except for the (non-existent) website?

I never had an answer to how she set up this charity (to help teach people with disabilities, in particular the blind "daily living skills" 18 months ago, she's 24, so would have been 22 1/2 when she set it up, yet she only learned to cook when she was 22....

Ok she's lived in 8 countries, but most of those as a child - as she's been in Vietnam (and Thailand?) since she was 22, lived in Italy from 19-21.......how come she set up the charity in Florida??

oh and having read one of the initial threads about this, which I hadn't yet read (there are quite a few so please forgive me )

"You can buy an electric razor or toothbrush in England, Europe, America, but not in 3rd world countries."

Yes you can.......I bought DH an electric razor for his birthday when we first got together, and last year when we visited my in-laws one entire family (cousins of his and their children) all had electric toothbrushes....

I think the judgemental people on this site need to find some other activities to entertain them.

Gabby, you're a clever young lady and very inspiring. You're truly unique and you have a lot to be proud of.

Gabby, you are incredible girl and deserve a lot of respect for what you have accomplished.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 24/11/2007 10:19

I'm not being judgmental - I'm asking questions - as would anyone who was serious about supporting a charity such as Eye-will.

Gabby, be proud of yourself, Sweetheart. There will always be judgemental people in this world. Don't take what they say to heart.

Keep doing what you're doing and keep your head up. You are a wonderful young girl.

Report
TheQueenOfQuotes · 24/11/2007 10:24

Look forget about all this "taking it to heart" non-sense - she's set up an NGO, if she wants it to grow and expand she'll need funds from elsewhere, people won't support it if she's "taking to heart" questions that people pose to her. As she probably knows well this is the REAL world, and people want to see evidence of it being properly registered, audited, her experience (the truth of it, not 10yrs in Italy, oh actually it was only 3yr etc etc).

If she takes simple questions about the legitimacy of her charity to heart then she's really going to struggle.

btw - I notice there's a lot (all of you in fact) of very new posters on this thread, why not come and have a look around the rest of the threads and say hello and introduce yourself?

Although you must be well meaning this excess of gushing support is frankly suspicious and is doing Gabby (whoever she may be, and I don't really care tbh) no favours.

If lots of new posters come on here to say the same thing on just one thread it is reasonable to assume that it is one nutter poster name changing trying to make some point or other. Please let it go and do what I said on the other thread, wait until the organisation has a little more credibility before coming back here to publicise it.

the rnib have no knowledge of this charity (they do have knowledge of a lot of charities abroad and are able to confirm whether such charities exist).

I have asked mnhq to check the identities of some of the posters on all the threads relating to this topic. Maybe we can clarify once and for all whether this is legitimate or not.
