Living overseas

Possibly moving overseas. This is very new to me. What do I need to know?!

Hello all. I've been lurking on these threads for a while soaking up all your wisdom, but this is the first time I've posted properly.

There is a strong possibility that my DH will be offered a job in Luxembourg and we are heading out this weekend for a visit and to take a look around.

This might sound silly, but what on earth do I need to be thinking about? neither me or my DH have lived outside of the UK before. We have a DD who is 14 months old so we don't have to think about schools/nursery just yet as I am a SAHM.

We plan to take a look at different areas to live (anyone with inside knowledge of areas I'd welcome your experience), I'd like to take a look at shopping areas esp supermarkets, parks and church as I'd like to get a feel for what my day-to-day life would be like.

Is there anything else in my naivety that I'm missing? I feel like I'm walking into the unknown, but am very excited at the same time, and I'd like to make good use of the time that we'll be there.

Thanks for reading if you got this far Smile.

Toddler groups/baby gymnastics
nearest doctor/hospital
rough idea of rents, food shopping costs - consider cost of living and new salary

re contract you need to think about the following:
flight allowance home
relocation allowance - is this tax free?
accommodation allowance
who pays the utilities
car?
will you rent out your home in the UK?
what will you do with your furniture?
can you ship everything to Lux?
who pays for shipping?
Who pays for storage?
language lessons required?
health insurance?
dental - paid for?
tax - where are you liable for tax and will you have help submitting tax returns?
assuming you are still there when your daughter starts school/kindergarten - school fees/local school/international school

You may not need to consider all of the above, but it's a good place to start.

Thank you very much. That is really helpful place to start! I hadn't thought about the nearest doctor for some reason! Very important!

I have rusty French, so I'll be working on improving that. Not sure how i'd go about finding toddler groups, I assumed I'd just speak to mums that I see nearby or in parks. Should probably research those too.......

Thanks again.

There are a few
Luxembourger MNs on here so it might be an idea to search a few threads with the country title or set up a new one.

Yes WallyBanters, thank you. I've been taking a look and there are some great threads. I just wanted something a bit more general for the time being Smile

A lot will depend on whether your DH is going to be working for one of the EU institutions or whether he will be working for a private company.
