Do businesses close in Hong Kong over the new year?

And if so, were they closed for the whole of last week or just a few days?

I'm trying to find out about businesses as opposed to things like clothes shops etc, if you know what I mean!

Yes many business close for CNY and normal life didn't resume until Monday 30th so many had the whole week off.

yes, most of the week off.
Lots of people take their big annual holiday now, so many go for two weeks overlapping before/after CNY.
Pretty much all open for business this week though.

If you mean offices/banks etc, it's a bit like Christmas in the UK

The public holidays this year were Monday, Tues , Wed, so most people took the extra 2 days and had a week off, but if you didn't do that, you go to work on the Thurs Fri.

Therefore the office isn't actually shut all week, but not much is happening/ no-one really expects to do much

Lovely thanks. I've ordered something from there and it's taking a little longer than expected to show up so I wondered if that was the reason. Hopefully it should be on its way soon then!

Yes- that's very likely
