Life-limiting illness

Is this the beginning of the end [sad]

Earlier this year my FIL was diagnosed with multiple brain tumours, which they couldn't treat. He has been receiving palliative care at home and we had been told that he has months rather than years to live

Over the past couple of weeks he has appeared to be going downhill quite rapidly and my DH has just rung me to say that he's being put on morphine...are we coming to the end?

Sad

Yes Sad. So sorry WheresMyCow Sad I gave my mum morphine in her final days - had to keep a diary she lasted 10 days.

What do the doctors or nurses say?

My nephew died of a brain tumour on 2nd October, 7 months after diagnosis, and he was only on morphine from from the Sunday, so 3 days before he died.

Sorry you are having to go through this awful time.

Morphine does tend to be given nearer the end, but only his Doc can give you a rough idea of how long he may have, and even then people are unpredictable. I am so sorry your FIL is so ill. Is he staying at home or going into a hospice?

Thanks WarmFuzzyFun Thanks

I think that I knew that already but I was hoping that someone would come along and say different. Sad

I still miss my mum so much, those 10 days were bittersweet Sad

Good luck WheresMyCow, I am off to have a quiet cry before the kids get home.

X

Thanks Mumble and Helly Thanks

Don't really know much else, I'm at work and DH rang me from FIL's earlier.

As far as I know he's staying at home as he is getting care coming in - but whether he will get moved I don't know. He was diagnosed about 8 months ago, but they said that he'd had them for about 12 months before he started showing signs of illness which was about this time last year. They thought that he'd had stroke at first and that is what he was originally treated for.

He has really deteriorated over the last few weeks though, it is just so sad Sad

I lost my Dad recently, so I sympathise very much with how your DH and all your family must be feeling. My Dad had deteriorated over a much longer time (Parkinson's) but then his death was quite sudden. It is terrible to watch someone you love get progressively more frail. I am also aware that you may lose your FIL very close to Christmas which is hard in itself. Take care of yourself and make sure things are in place for when he does leave you (will , plans for what sort of funeral he might like etc) there is a huge amoint to do when someone dies. My brother did official stuff and I organised the service, it is very very hard to do at the same time as raw grief so having a rough idea of what is wanted would help.
Again, I'm very sorry you are going through this.
