my friend bought a laptop from pc world, in order to talk to her dp who is abroad working, via skype. They have a 3month old baby and want to keep in touch. She picked it thinking it would have a good webcam, but found out after trying it that the webcam is in fact rubbish.
She has spoke to them to ask if she could exchange it for a more expensive model (toshiba, to replace with macbook) as she has only used it once to try the webcam.
PC world shop on the telephone have stated they are under no obligation to replace as it has been used, and are unlikely to do so even though she will be swapping for a model £400 more expensive...customer service said it is local shop discretion, they can but they don't have to.
Is there anything she can do persuade them to exchange. She is really upset and her dp is furious with her for not getting the 'right' model in the first place, and because they cannot easily talk as was the intention.
they won't be able to resell it at full price so I doubt they will exchange it for her

aw shame. I guessed this might be so, but told her to in and stand her ground anyway, on a sat and with her little baby with her!
She only used it to find the webcam was shit! She is not the most it savvy person i know. They told her it was her fault for not researching the webcam aspect properly before purchasing
.
She had wanted me to go with her as i am not good at taking no for an answer, but i am feeling poorly today so thought i would give her some ammunition...or not!

She would be better off disabling the built in web-cam and buying an external one to plug in? lot cheaper too..
If she wants to take ut back then best thing is to tell them that when she b ought ut she specifically asked for one with a decent webcam and this one is shit. Also flutter eyes lashes and cry if necessary. Take baby at feeding time also.
As an addition... her husband, for example, is a twat. - He should ha ve bought it, or at least told her which model to getr if she didnt know much about them.

geordie - i agree ! her dp said this model was fine, it was only after they tried to use webcam he realised he has no clue either (or perhaps he still does not realise!).
I have told her to do that, flutter her eyes, go now while it is busier, take baby, cry if required. She is also very pretty and can normally flirt very well without trying...
not suggesting she does this on purpose of course

Poor thing. She is stressed enough as it is! I hope they take pity on her. She only bought it this week and has had to come and use our macbook as she can't use the webcam on hers! So she will need to do something or else he won't get to see the baby, which was the point of it!

If she is not especially techy, did she consult a staff member and they advised it was a suitable model - maybe she can focus on that

Oh i have no idea. I had expected her to talk to her DP about it, but don't know if she did or looked online or what first. She talked to my dh about it a few weeks ago, he did not specifically recommend that one. in fact he would have recommended she buy the macbook as we are apple fans
.
I am sure she would have asked for some advice...i hope so!

She got it changed! With not too much fuss, the guy on the phone was being a jobsworth and she saw the manager and smiled sweetly.
Ah, the power of a see through shirt sweet smile

Never under-estimate the power of a decent set - especially where computer geeks are concerned
