Free Or Cheap But Good Independent Financial Advice Needed.

My elderly neighbour is caring for his (much older) wife. He now has to pay (a huge amount) for carer's to go in to help wash and change his wife every day (3 times a day I think).
They are not a wealthy couple and he is trying to find a good, but reasonably priced independent financial advisor to give him some advice.
He is not on the internet, so I've looked online for him, but can't find anything at all...so I thought I'd ask the collective on Mn if anyone has any idea please?

I feel so bad for them. His wife has dementia and it cost him £1000 just to be able to use their joint bank account after she was dx'd. He's really worried and I'm worried for him.

Thank you in advance.

Have you tried the Citizens Advice Bureau?

I haven't pootle and he can't leave her long enough to do so himself.

Try Age UK as well.

Has she had a local authority assessment for her care needs? Appreciate that she may not be deemed critical enough to qualify for financial assistance too but it's a good starting point. The Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) accredits financial advisers specialising in this area so check their website for one local to you. Was the £1000 charge for joint account to do with arranging power of attorney? At least if that's now in place then should be more of a one-off cost.

Thank you.

Yes, I believe she has as she has lots of equipment at home (hospital bed and various other things). She was receiving the carer's via the NHS, but apparently, that only lasts a certain amount of time and then you have to pay for it if you want it to continue. There's no way he could do without it, so he's had to find the money...
Yes to Power of Attorney! I couldn't remember what it was called ~ thank you smile
I will look these things up for him/them and pass it on. Thank you so much Sunseed thanks
