child benefit and pension payments

following on from the child benefit thread about being under threshold. we will put more money into dh's pension but it is me who really needs a pension as i lost my employee pension (it is frozen) when I took redundancy and I am now a stay at home parent and likely to be until the final dc starts school in four years..

Can we pay into a private pension for dh and then buy an annuity for me when it comes to it? or is it not transferrable? I know little about pensions but am going to start educating myself as up to now i've just relied on my employers scheme.

dh has about £3k over the amount where we wouldn't give up any cb if that makes sense so we need to look at his adjusted net income.
TIA
