Copyright?

Hi, I want to get started as a private tutor. I want to teach short courses in English literature to children. This will involve choosing a novel or poetry collection and then studying it. The students will be required to get their own copies of the book.
I would like to make assignment sheets for the students to complete after lessons, these may occasionally contain very short quotes from the text as part of a question or writing prompt.
My question is whether there is any copyright implication in doing this?
Am I free to use novels for book studies like this, or do I have to seek permission? I don't want to photocopy or scan any part of any book.

As far as I know, using short extracts for educational purposes is fine.

It might be worth checking the Gutenburg Project to see if the book you are using is out of copyright and available to download.
