CAFCASS are the court's child welfare officers. Before the first hearing they will carry out a safeguarding check by contacting parents, police, social services etc to see if they hold any relevant information and identify any child welfare concerns.

At the first hearing an attempt is made to reach agreement. If no agreement can be reached the judge decides what further information is required (if any) in the form of reports to assist him/her make a decision. CAFCASS may then be asked to carry out a more detailed welfare report or a children's wishes and feelings report and to make recommendations, a timetable is set for future hearings and interim orders may be made.

Cafcass are family liaison people who try and get you to both come to an agreement. I didnt agree as it wasnt in my childs best interest and said yes at the time but then told me ex to do one.
