Delivery driver damaged our vehicle

We had a bed delivered today while we were out- it was due to come next Monday. The driver called and was asked to come back later in the day or arrange another date.
He called back after going round the back of the house and insisted on putting it over the 6ft gates at the back. He was told not to.
When we came home had. The bed is a metal framed day bed with a fold up bed for underneath so not light. All four boxes hit our truck the heaviest bouncing off the wing scratching it quite deeply. We have security cameras at the back and watching it you can see he showed no care where the boxes landed at all. I called and spoke to him and he thinks an apology is enough. Can we insist he pays for repairs ? I intend to call the company he works for tomorrow .

You need to call and write to the company from whom you bought the bed (assuming they arranged delivery and you didn't hire the delivery driver?).
I'd suggest write down what you intend to say to them beforehand, including:

  • that the delivery was not at the time arranged
  • that he dropped the bed over the gates despite being told not to
  • that your vehicle has been damaged
  • that you have camera footage

Ask them for an email address and postal address and follow up the phone call in writing, confirming what you said and anything they said (especially if the offer compensation). In the letter I'd suggest giving them a time limit for a response (eg 7 days) and say if no response is received you will be seeking legal recourse.

Sounds completely out of order, I wouldn't use them again!
