getting the will to do paperwork yourself

After somebody has died, to get the will from the solicitor who has it stored, the solicitor who is dealing with the estate (if it is a different one) writes and asks for it with a death cerificate, correct? Is it the same if the executor just wants to do the paperwork themselves - they just write to the solicitor who has the will with a copy of the death certificate.

Where I worked until recently, we asked the executors to come in in person to collect the will, and bring in their ID as well as the death certificate.

Yes, agree with mumblechum, we require all executors to prove ID and consent to the release of the will.
