How to get removed from birth certificate?

I?m asking this on behalf of my sister.

During a previous relationship her partner had a son who is now about 3. When the little boy was about a year old, one of his friends mentioned that the mother had confessed to having an affair and that she was worried the little boy wasn?t his. They had a DNA test and it turned out he wasn?t the father. As you can imagine he was gutted but as the relationship had been breaking down for some time he decided to cut his ties there and then and asked her to remove his name from the birth certificate while the child was still a baby and hopefully wouldn?t remember any of it. She said she was able to do this since they had the DNA test results.

Anyway, he found out today that he is still on the birth certificate and she has approached him to ask him to agree to her new partner adopting the little boy. My sister is furious on his behalf and they don?t know what to do. It?s been proven he isn?t the father but presumably in the eyes of the law he still is since he?s named on the birth certificate? How does he go about being removed from it? Would they need another DNA test? They have been told it should have been done within 90 days of the last test, but another one may not be affordable for them right now.

He's not opposed to the adoption itself but ultimately he doesn't want his name involved at all- the last thing he wants is the child turning up in 15 year's time looking for his 'real' father only to be upset when he finds out the truth.

I realise this all sounds like a terrible soap opera. My sister's partner is the nicest guy and he's just wants to put it all behind him. Any advice gratefully received. They are reluctant to involve a lawyer at this stage because of the cost so would appreciate a nudge in the right direction.

TIA
