One for the lawyers

After a quarter of a century as a family lawyer (plus wills on the side), I am leaving practice, to do an admin job for an anti-piracy organisation.

I am very very happy not to deal with any more divorces ever ever again, but I must admit I got a twinge in court today when the barrister on the other side referred to me as "my learned friend" and I realised that I am never going to be anyone's learned friend ever again.

AIBU to feel a little nostalgic, or should I get whacked round the gob with a damp brief?[grim]

Smile Thanks, it is a bit of a horrible job really, not just the nature of the work but the firm is a bit crap. Since I handed my notice in, none of the management have spoken to me. They always do that whenever anyone hands their notice in, they see it as a betrayal Sad

Sorry to hear you're leaving the career you've had for so long. Good luck. Hope the new job works out for you.

Will you still be will writing Shock

Sorry to hear you are leaving law. Working on piracy sounds really interesting though. Do you thing it will be a permanent thing or just a career break?

(note of caution - I tried leaving a few years back. I managed 18 months away before being lured back!!)

All the best with your new career Grin.

Thanks everyone! Yes, I'll still be running my will writing practice, but that only takes up about 2.5 days a week, and the new job's only 2.5 days.

Scroobious, I really hope I don't get lured back! I can't see me going back into a high street solicitor's practice, apart from anything else I'd have to declare my freelance will writing firm and almost certainly they'd expect me to ditch it which I have no intention of doing. There's nothing better than knowing that all the profits come to me instead of 90% going to the partners of the firm.

Good luck!! so glad you'll still be doing the will writing; I really need to write mine up, but can't afford to spend the money right now...so when I can, I'll probably come to you :)

woo hoo! you got it! well done Mumbles, so pleased for you. Finally escaping from that witch/bitch (delete as appropriate) that you work for.

When I handed my notice in (to the witch I told you about) she went absolutely mental. Screamed and shouted at me, threw my pot plant at my head and made me leave straight away, throwing 5 years worth of collected stuff in my office out on to the street. I walked out of the office saying 'that went well then'. And SHE was a member of Resolution Shock
Before I'd even loaded my belongings into my car she was on the firm to a partner at the firm of solicitors who head hunted me screaming at him for giving me a job.

Anyway, I digrefss. Fabulous news, I know how unhappy you were there and you will always be my learned friend. As its a bit early for Wine have some Thanks

I applied for an interesting job a few days ago, still in the legal profession but a bit different

Good luck mumble. I suppose the question is- are you keeping up your practicing certificate (not sure if you need it for will writing)?

Of all the people I know who have left the law it is only the ones who haven't kept up their PC that have managed to make a clean break. The ones who have kept it up 'just in case' have ended up suckered back in from time to time.

MOS Flowers and Grin at your bitch of an ex boss. Mine has literally not spoken to me even to say good morning in the two weeks since I resigned.

And muchos congratulations to your very clever son! He'll be a High Court Judge one of these days! Good luck in your new job appln.

Thistledew, I don't need to keep up my praticing certificate, as I have no intention of ever being a divorce lawyer again Grin Feels good to type that after a quarter of a century! but of course need to keep up membership of the Inst. of Professional Will Writers and of the Institute of Legal eXefutigves.

Mumble I've all about your bitch of a boss, I feel conned!!!!

Good luck, I've tried to send a few friends your way too who leave near to Marlow but don't know if they ever succumbed. They are cp'd now which fortunately makes things better has my friend's nearest kin is her nutcase father who loathes her partner - though we think as well as being a mys bully he may have the start of dementia!
