My sis has named me executor.....

..She and my BIL have named me executor in their will. I have a meeting arranged (Friday) with a bloke who called me this afternoon.

I don't really understand what this means or why they have named me as we don't really get on. That is not to say that I don't love her or that I wouldn't do almost anything for her.

So what does it mean? What will I have to do?

When someone dies their executors are responsible for sorting out their estate, getting control of all their assets, paying off any debts (but only using the estate - you don't become personally liable for the deceased's debts), paying any taxes (including inheritance tax - again, you don't become personally liable for these) and distributing the estate in accordance with their will.

Until they die you don't have to do anything.

Who is this person you are meeting? Have you checked this with your sister and BIL?

You don't have to do it if you don't want to. The appointment is a power to act, not a duty. But let her know you're not interested if it's bothering you.

Why are you meeting with anyone? I'm a will writer, have written hundreds if not thousands and have never asked to meet any of the execs.

That is my concern, which is why I asked if the OP has checked this with her sister and BIL. I'm worried that this is some kind of scam.

Hello I sounds as though the "Will Writer? may be after some additional business. If you are thinking about a Will, always check your local solicitor first they often are very competitive and have usually will not have any additional costs for storage or review of the will. You might want to watch out for the appointment of unwanted professional executors who will charge for their time and reduce the value of your estate.
It is very unusual to see executors unless the people doing the Will are a couple. The Will remains a private document between you and your legal adviser, a mention to the proposed executor that you want to appoint them is usually enough.
