How long back can you trace documents?

If you have a legal case and you need to trace documents i.e. rent and bills, bank statements, inland revenue or benefits, how many years back can you go? Do banks etc have the info after many years?

Under the Data Protection Act they have to keep records for a minimum of 6 years, but might have them for longer.

I went back by 10 years. They had all records, charged to go through them though :(
