Magistrates summons

Name changed to ask this question... I've received a summons to appear at the magistrates court on an assault charge. I intend to plead not guilty. Can someone who knows about criminal law tell me what will happen at the first hearing? I haven't got copies of any of the evidence against me so when can I expect to get this or do I have to apply for it?

Get a lawyer, it's the only thing to do.

No advice but I got done for assualt and was so petrified by whole police thing that I accepted a caution .
Wish I'd had courage to go to court and deny ( whole thing was ridiculous and vindictive ) - good on you and good luck .

Hi there, at the first hearing they will want to know whether you are pleading guilty or not guilty. Before you decide that they have to give you some papers containing the case against you. It is called Advanced Disclosure'. You are then entitled to some time to read them and/or get some legal advice. There should be a 'Duty Solicitor' at court who can give you some free legal advice.
