Does the Land Registry only go back as far as 2000?

I am trying to ascertain ownership of a property that may have changed hands in 1996, in Cornwall.

Am I reading the LR site correctly as it seems to say it can only provide details of property that changed hands after 2000!

I don't really want to pay them a fee to find they have no record.

Goes back to 1925 - but not all property has been registered since then.

I have a feeling (tho' any conveyancers on here may correct me!) that 2000 was when they stopped issuing paper deeds such as Charge Certificates. As Collaborate says, the records go back a long way. All transactiions since 1986 have to be registered.

The cost is incredibly cheap anyway.

OK, probably worth me doing then. I jut didn't want to be an idiot and ask for info which their website may have made clear didn't exist

But if the 'free' enquiry says, having found the correct address:

Sorry, we do not have a record of any titles for this property. This does not necessarily mean that the property is unregistered.

AM I wasting my time & money?!

Just do an index map search. I think it costs £4. sometimes the address you might know a property as doesn't match the address the LR knows it as. If there's a risk of that, you should literally go and inspect the map.

It's a bit frustrating as I know the house was bought by the tenant from the Council back in Thatcher's time so there MUST be a record of who by! It's not a 350 year old property with no provenance!
