We had a great extended family get together yesterday and our children were trying to work out what the actual title of their relationship was.

So can anyone tell me please, what is the relationship called between my cousin's children and me?

And what is the relationship called between my cousin's children and my children?

TIA

Your first cousins children are your first cousins once removed. Your children and their children are second cousins.

Agree that your children and your cousin's children are second cousins to each other.

The way you work it out is:

The word "removed" is used when the two people whose relationship you are working out are different generations. And the "first / second / third" bit is to show how many generations you are from the original two cousins.

So my children and my first cousin's children are the same generation, and are therefore first cousins. My grandchildren and my first cousin's grandchildren are third cousins to each other.

But if the people are different generations, then they are "removed". So the relationship between me and my cousin's children is "first cousin once removed".

Me and my cousin's grandchildren are "first cousins twice removed" because we are two generations different.

And you can even get into the realms of "third cousin twice removed" etc but that is making my head spin a bit.

thanks very much guys.
The children all got on so well that by the end of the evening they had decided themselves to just call each other 'cousin' anyway but it's nice to know the official title.
