Hello there...Are there any Germans or German speakers in the Islington area who would like to meet up or does anyone know of an international baby group? My son is 11 weeks old and it would be nice to meet up with other Germans or German speakers .....

Simi, I can't speak German at all (and am shamelessly hijacking this thread to be honest) but I just wondered if you could have a look at my "drinking during pregnancy" thread in the media section. If you can help at all I'd be extremely grateful! Thanks xxx

PS: There is quite a large German community in Petersham, Surrey - just the other side of Richmond - might be worth investigating!

Hi Simi, I know it's quite a while since you posted this message, but I have only just noticed it. I am German and go on business into the London area on a regular basis. Interested? Are you German too?

Hausfrau Wed 08-Sep-04 09:29:46

Hi, Not a German speaker yet or living in Islington but thought I'd drop in to say that I'm frantically learning German as I've been living in Stuttgart for 6 weeks. My vocab is a bit bizzare cos I'm learning from picture books. Kids vocab is far more important to me. I know 15 different boat words but cannot ask for the bill in a restaurant.

Bine1101 Wed 08-Sep-04 14:09:02

Hi Hausfrau, Have you moved to Stuttgart forever? I feel for you, I am from the northern part of Germany and I swear that if somebody from Stuttgart says anything to me I will not understand a single word. What an accent!!! Hope you'll be ok there. If you need any help with translations or whatever give me a shout. How many kids have you got, how old?

roisin Wed 08-Sep-04 14:27:03

Bron! I'd missed your name-change. I've been thinking of you and wondering how you've been getting on. I guess you're about half way towards your "3 month decision point". How's it all looking? Have you been to the Spa baths at Stuttgart yet? (I can't remember what they're called.)

geekgrrl Sat 18-Sep-04 13:14:27

really really late on this thread but am from north Germany too - Kiel to be exact. Am now living in equally wet North Yorks. Whereabouts are you from Bine?

Bine1101 Sat 25-Sep-04 18:07:06

Hi Geek, Only just read your message. Hope you'll check again soon. I am from Wilhelmshaven, now living in Hampshire. But I travel up to North Yorks on a regular basis, as my husband is from up there. Where do you live in NY? We travel to the Middlesbrough area. How long have you been living there? I have been in England now for 7 1/2 years and you are the first German I speak to living in this country. I had already given up on meeting anybody :-) Really exciting!!! Hope to speak to you again soon. Kind regards, Sabine.

Hi there,
bringing my nearly 3 year old dg and 7 wweks old db up bi-lingually German/English in west London/Ealing and would love to meet other parents so kids can play and we can chat.
P.S, Bibi1101... nothing wrong with the Stuttgart accent... then again, my dad's from Ulm and I'm originally from Munich.
PPS think there's a rather large German community in Ham as the German school's over that way

Hausfrau Mon 25-Oct-04 13:09:08

and I can't hear a problem with the Stuttgart accent either! I guess I'm going to end up speaking Schwabish!!!

EvaD Fri 05-Nov-04 08:18:32

Hi, I live in Bloomsbury (always sounds pretentious to me!) and am half German. I have tried to speak German with my DD 3 and DS 1 and not got on very well with it.

I was a member of a german-speaking playgroup when I lived in New York. We would take turns to meet in eachothers houses for a 'playdate' and speak German together for the afternoon.

I keep meaning to start something like that here. I've also heard there's a german saturday school in north london, but I think it's aimed at 3+

Hausfrau Fri 05-Nov-04 09:00:58

Hey! Can you help me with German traditions and festivals etc? We're doing a St Martin's walk on Tuesday and I know I have to put stockings out on Dec 6th but I do not want DS1 (aged 4) to be the one to tell me I've missed something important. Someone mentioned Fascing when we were talking about fancy dress - what and when? Someone really should write a book of esential occasions for nonlocal parents!!!

MrsBigD Fri 05-Nov-04 09:13:35

SIMI - shame you're in Islington... bit far for me I'm in Ealing

EVA - daft question... where's Bloomsbury? would love to get something going. Had posted a thread for Ealing but no feedback as yet

Hausfrau - Fasching starts officially on 11th 11 at 11:11, but the major parties are in January and February once christmas and new year is out of the way. As for St. Martins, as far as I remember we made some lanterns and went for a walk when I was in Kindi. 6/12 is Nikolaus with generally nuts/satsumas and chocolates . As for other kids occasions... I'll have a check with a friend of mine who's still in Germany. Will also have a look around if I find something on-line.

Hausfrau Fri 05-Nov-04 09:34:42

Dannke Danke Danke!!!

EvaD Fri 05-Nov-04 09:38:27

Sorry, Bloomsbury is in central London - we live near Holborn/Russell Square tube station.

MrsBigD Fri 05-Nov-04 09:39:50

Hausfrau
have a look at this
especially the second part

Hausfrau Fri 05-Nov-04 10:24:59

fab

SusiS Thu 11-Nov-04 09:03:35

great!
was looking for such a site

see! luckily ds is too little but i would have missed st. martin

i remember making the lanterns is the most fun and then walking around with a lit candle (kids think that's just brilliant) and sing songs

Hausfrau Thu 11-Nov-04 09:07:30

We did St Martin last night - an hour's walk through the woods to a HUGE bonfire, gluwein, Goose biscuits and loads of singing! "Ich Geh mit meine Laterne!!" Oh and the Lanterns looked sooooooooooo pretty . Both kids slept all night til 6:30 this morning so we'll have to do it every night now!

MrsBigD Thu 11-Nov-04 11:17:07

Hoausfrau - I see you're getting there with the German

so you want to send the kids into the woods? Hansel & Gretel a favoutite?

meysey Sat 20-Nov-04 20:56:41

Hi Simi

I'm half-German and live in Hackney near to Islington and am keen for my boys (4 and 10 months) to learn German as well as for me to stop mine getting rusty . We're quite good on German songs already.

So it would be great to meet up some time.

Simi Thu 09-Dec-04 22:36:48

Hi meysey,

Haven't really checked this thread anymore, sorry for the late reply. Will be going home over Christmas, but would be nice to meet up in January, what do you think?
Our DS are almost the same age, mine is 8 months now, it seems such a long time ago that I posted my message when he was just 11 weeks old...You can CAT me if you like ;-)
