Self-funded or Private IVF

Im confused can you help? Whats the difference between self funded and private IVF?

In a nut shell; We don't qualify for IVF on the NHS. Following tests on the NHS, the Doc I saw at my local hospital gave me a number to call if I wished to go down the IVF route, which I have followed up. It has been very slow and resulting from a very frustrated telephone conversation, I now understand that the hospital has 2 units, one who deal with NHS and self funded patients and one who deal with private patients.

So I just can't understand what the difference - to me the terms self funded and private mean the same thing.

Has anyone else come across this - Whats the difference?

I think self funded refers to patients paying for NHS treatment and private refers to patients paying for treatment at a private clinic.

As PP said there are 2 options - you can pay for your treatment in NHS hospital & services (I suppose this would mean self funded) & you could go to a totally private unit (no NHS staff or patients) which would also be self funded but referred to as 'private'. I suppose the latter would be more expensive than the former..

Thanks Guys - Makes sense when you explain it like that! Time to check the price lists to compare.
