www.allencarrseasyway.co.uk/ (there's also a book, if the course is too expensive) has an excellent reputation and good success rates, but dh has to want to stop.

Mine had to stop for icsi, he managed it, point out if your new treatment fails he needs to find 5k for private and put you through all those injections and scans and sedation again, smoking can reduce your chances of fertilisation

My DP had a semen analysis when he had stopped 2 weeks previous, he had one 9 months later and it was amazing the difference, the first time it was full of dead and deformed sperm.

They say it takes 3 months to make eggs/sperm so he needs to quit at least 3 month before x

Lauren83 my hubby had a sperm test done back in January and it was normal. How ever i told him he needs to stop if not we will be rejected for IVF, he promised me he will stop. Now fingers crossed he can stop it. And so far after ttc for 2 years I am disappointed we couldn't conceive naturally but we will try everything we can.thanks

That probably re affirms in his head that's its ok to carry on I guess? That's how my DP would view it. Although we had a SA that came back 'normal' from the local hospital but when the ivf clinic did it that's when we got the full breakdown

He did have a period of time on electronic cigarettes before he managed to stop completely

Good luck!

Man always see things differently, and because the test was fine he thought he could get away with it but not really. The nhs criteria is strict and I cant pay for it privately. Hopefully it will be ok.He promised so he will be reminded all the time.

I had a family member in this position. They lied; said he didn't smoke! They took his word for it, no 'smoking test' was done; if such a thing even exists?!?
Completely unethical I know.... But thought I'd mention it. Hopefully won't get 'bashed' for suggesting this.... Obviously giving up is a better idea!

I always wondered if they checked or not, I would be too scared of getting spot checked and getting cancelled, and obviously of decreasing my chances of it working

Luckily I never smoked as I understand it must be really tough quitting

I'm in Lambeth - my DH blithely announced that he smoked occasionally during our first IVF appointment at Guys....we had to wait 6 months before we could start our treatment. They are really strict about this stuff. To be fair, though, smoking does affect sperm quality/motility so if you want to give yourselves the best chance, get your husband to quit now.

My husband quit the day after our first appointment (with the help of nicotine replacement therapy)!

I would prefer that my DH quit now rather than take any risks. I dont know if there is a way of finding out if someone smokes or not but I dont want to be in a position of lying. He has to stop and thats it.

My DH smokes. I asked him if he would consider giving up as I don't like the idea of of smoke on his clothes/hands & handling a baby. He tried and failed. Said if I got pregnant he'd quit then because he'd have real motivation.

Forward to his SA results this week, his motility is very low, and has been diagnosed as sub-fertile. I hoped his Dr would impress lifestyle changes upon him. Nope. Wasn't even mentioned! Just told him "oh you can have ivf, it will definitely work if your DW is problem free."

Am so cross. Would much rather him quit smoking first and see if it improves his sperm than have me go through ivf and all it entails. Haven't spoken to him about it yet. Need to go in with research/help. Might show him this thread...

That's so bad! That's not true at all and goes against everything I was ever told, it makes all the difference!

We were nhs at first and got the bad results so had icsi as was told low everything, then when we got tested again at a private clinic after he had been quit for much longer they said there was no issues, he even said to quote "you have very handsome sperm"

Wow if having a baby isn't motivation enough to make a man quit smoking what can !!! I mean what ! My DH promised me he would stop so he better keep his word or we will have lots of trouble.
