Thinking about FET to try for number 2 soon - advice please!

We already have a gorgeous child from our fresh IVF cycle and have three frozen blastocysts. We're hoping to try for a second child using these soon.
I've a few questions / things I'd like to hear others' experiences of:

  • transferring frozen embryos - we'll probably need to do this as we now live far from where our initial treatment happened and the embryos are being stored.

  • travelling long distances for treatment - if we decide not to move the embryos

  • what a FET involves and how it compares to a fresh cycle

  • whether to do a medicated or natural FET

Thanks!

Hi Stuck
I'm currently 38+4 weeks pregnant after our FET in the summer
I don't know anything about moving your blasts but I wanted to let you know that I found the process far less stressful and all-consuming than the fresh cycle. I had meds but they were just tablets and pessaries. I can't remember if there are options but I'd have done the equivalent of a short protocol if that even exists for a FET.
Good luck!

Thanks Caipirinha and many congratulations on your pregnancy!

I did the short protocol on the fresh cycle too. Would be great to not have to inject for the FET.

There were definitely no injections. It was all much easier and calmer, less military like if you know what I mean!

Hi OP I've got a dc from a fresh cycle and trying FET soon using blastocysts too.

To transfer embryos you can either collect in an incubator from one clinic and drive them to the New clinic, or you can pay for a courier (the receiving clinic should be able to advise on this).

I wouldn't travel long distances for FET as there are scans etc which I'd find hard work, but it's a personal decision.

I think the success rates are similar for natural and medicated FET. To do natural you need to have regular cycles and ovulate each month, there is little flexibility in the tx as ET is booked for a few days after you ovulate/surge. I opted for medicated, as though it's slightly more expensive it gives a bit more flexibility for scan dates, ET etc as you can coast a bit on the drugs, obviously on natural there's no leeway as your body dictates when ET needs to be.

I opted to inject rather than sniff as you still down regulate on a medicated cycle. I found sniffing annoyed my nose and was three times per day, where injecting is just once. Injecting suprecur is much cheaper too, it cost me £17 for a ten day supply of injections, whereas sniffing would have cost £135!! Have a look at online pharmacies too if you want to get your drugs cheaper.

Good luck!

I too have had natural FET, less stress in terms off mess etc but the same 2ww stress obviously. Goodluck x
