Infertility

So frustrating

My DH and I have been ttc for nearly 2 years and we have just been given a referral to a fertility specialist at the local NHS hospital.

I have now spent over 5 hours on hold over a 5 day period listening to some irritating message trying to book an appointment - tried calling at different times etc. I called my GP again (hoping that they had some secret GP way to contact the hospital - and it turns out that they could) - the GP's secretary called the hospital and they promised to call me (twice) which they still haven't done.

I am finding this so frustrating, we know that we have at least one issue (low motility) but we can't even start the process until we get this appointment. I know that we will have to go on the waiting list, be we can't even get on the waiting list because I can't get through. Has any one experienced this kind of thing?

Thanks

Meant to add, the message was about how they were currently experiencing a high volume of calls etc and that I could try calling at a different time (which I have done!!!)

Hi cherry pie

How frustrating indeedAngry
I haven't experienced this sort of thing exactly but working for the NHS I know there can be times when systems break down and it's really annoying. I'd suggest you contact the local PALS office of the trust - patient advice and liaison service, if you google the hospital and pals you should find it - explain the problem and how much it is effecting you and ask them to look into it. It's no guarantee but can sometimes work well. Failing that, I'd write a polite but firm letter to the clinic and give them a date (say in 14 days time) to contact you by to explain the delay. I personally wouldn't spend too much longer holding on the phone - that will only make you more frustrated - and in the scheme of things a few weeks wont make a difference to the waiting list. Isn't acceptable though.

Another thought is are they the only fertility clinic in your area and do you know whether they are generally well regarded? If not might be worth chatting with your GP about other options

Hope that helps
