don't like the woman but she's having more of a go at the press than us.

we're not journalists though.

well not all of us.

So Tanya is a MNetter then persumably?
I didnt know the MN biscuit 'issue' made it to the front page of the Times

Report
Hassled · 20/10/2009 21:13

I read it as being a bit of a go at us being so interested and all. But yes, on second reading it is more about the press I suppose.

Not that I have ever heard of her!

Nor do I care what biscuit Gordon favours

But sneaky (positive or negative!) references to MN make me go

"although I suspect only after consulting a focus group that counselled a frugal biscuit."

This is paraphrased from a MN thread isn't it???

Report
preciouslillywhite · 20/10/2009 21:19

She didn't mention mn, did she?

I thought she was having a pop at the right wing press when I read it earlier

I was too busy being shocked at oatcakes to pay too much attention.

Oatcakes!!

They're not even a biscuit, ffs. Who's he trying to kid?

Report
preciouslillywhite · 20/10/2009 21:21

Bet Tanya not a mumsnetter

Bet she's more your archetypal Lazy Journo Troll type

I quite like her. She has spiwit

Oakcake is a monk's biscuit

proper men eat digestives

GrimmaTheNome · 20/10/2009 21:26

I must admit that 'oatcake' makes me distrust Cameron. An oatcake is a fine thing in its own way but surely its not anyone's favourite? Similar reservations about Rich tea ... Gordon's answer, albeit tardy, is the only one which rings 100% true

Report
hatwoman · 20/10/2009 21:26

they're not for monks when they've got a load of butter and jam on them. like the one in my hand this very moment.

Report
preciouslillywhite · 20/10/2009 21:30

I admit an oatcake is Something Else with a bit of butter on it

...but still not a biscuit

Is DC too upper clarss to have tea and a biscuit, do we think? Did he misunderstand the question?

...sorry if this has been Done already- if it has, I missed it

MrsJiggle86 · 20/10/2009 21:31

Wow this biscuit thing will still be in the papers in 6 months

scroll down a bit for her take on Humpty Dumpty had me in fits of laughter!

I reckon it'll form part of the campaigning ploys during the upcoming election.

The Tories will suggest that Brown can't even answer a simple question like 'what's your favourite biscuit'; Labour will say you can't trust Cameron because he claims the humble oatcake as his biscuit of choice, and who the feck likes oatcakes?!; and the LibDems will bleat on that Clegg is a good egg because he likes Rich Tea. And everyone will think, how bland - rather like the biscuit.

cherryblossoms · 20/10/2009 21:52

I'll mind you all to cast fewer aspersions on men-who-like-oatcakes - they are dh's favourites.

No, he would be shocked and horrified and appalled if anyone were to proffer one laden with butter.

Am slightly saddened that some Tory focus-group chappie has decided they are Dave-appropriate. I am now wondering what the hidden "meaning" of the oatcake is ... and thus whether I need to consider divorce.

Report
ZephirineDrouhin · 20/10/2009 22:11

She's right. GB was right too. I don't want a prime minister who is prepared to pander to such nonsense.

Cherryblossoms - the meaning of Cameron's oatcakes is surely, as Tanya Gold says, frugality. In real terms this translates as massive public spending cuts once the tories are in power, which will probably be socially and economically disastrous.

Report
VulpusinaWilfsuit · 20/10/2009 22:21

rofl at Dave-appropriate.

They are marvellous thickly spread with butter and crabapple jelly. I am not a Tory btw.

I do think the Party Ring is massively underrated. Gordon should have gone for this, to corral the camp vote I feel.

Report
cherryblossoms · 20/10/2009 22:25

Zepherine - I agree with you muchly.

Would that the column inches and widespread dissemination of the biscuit incident had been rather for the experts (ie, not me, with my v. tenuous non-familiarity with Keynes,) who have declared the proposed fiscal cut-backs of the Tories to be a disaster-in-waiting.

Report
ZephirineDrouhin · 20/10/2009 22:37

Yes quite, cherryblossoms, I should like to see the marvellous William Keegan write about the significance of Cameron's oatcakes. But then I suppose only the 0.000000000001% of the population who bother to read the Observer's Business section would ever get to see it.

Report
GrimmaTheNome · 20/10/2009 22:46

Maybe we should invite Nick Griffin and confine ourselves to the biscuit question. Give the man equal 'air time' on the one subject dear to our hearts - he could hardly complain, could he?

Report
Hassled · 20/10/2009 22:47

I have never knowingly eaten an oatcake. I don't think I'd recognise an oatcake if it suddenly leapt out of my cup of tea screaming "DAVE!". But then I am far from frugal.

ZD - I am one of those people who reads the Money Agony Column at the back of the Business Section, and nothing else inside the Business Section. But that was an interesting link - I will resolve to do better.

I can't imagine Nick Griffin eats biscuits. Although maybe there are some vile and odious biscuits I've yet to find in Sainsburys. Somewhere behind the Oat Cakes.
