This sounds worse than the bird flu that thankfully never really happened.

Sky news have a press conference on now about possible cases in new york. When do we start panic buying .

Well, we're about due for a pandemic that wipes a few million out.

It seems to be moving frighteningly fast.

Meglet you do seem worried.. I don't think you need to start panicking.

I just saw this on the Spanish news, outbreak in Mexico. Blimey. Looks bad. There's no vaccine either.

I mentioned this to DH after I had heard about it on the radio news.

HIs answer - "don't answer the door to anyone wearing a sombrero".

I am scared too but I get scared about everything. It looks like not that many people have died.

hi flight
yes i posted about this happening a month after sanofi pasteur announced they were building a big plant in Mexico to manufacture flu vaccine and prepare for a pandemic

very serendipitous

i lived through sars and face masks and schools closing and was impressed by the level of panic -- perhaps I am a bit too cynical about these things

Report
llareggub · 25/04/2009 21:59

Better activate that zombie plan then.

flightattendant just saw your other thread. Go to bed and don't keep reading scary stuff! I hope some sleep helps.

BWMON they would have to be Quorn bacon sarnies.

Is there evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission yet, or is it contact with pigs only? I think it's impossible to produce a vaccine until there is h-to-h transmission, as that involves a virus mutation.

Anyway, latest WHO update is here.

Report
Ivykaty44 · 25/04/2009 22:04

Yes I do beleive there is evidence of transmition between humans and 60 people have died already and 1000 people have been effected with the illness - so a high death rate if caught.

They seem to think that some flu jabs will combat the illness - who knows the vulnerable may still get by as they have had jabs.

The last big one was after WW1, ore died of the flu than in the war.....

Report
Meglet · 25/04/2009 22:04

Radio 4 news just said it is human to human.

We will be fine... nothing to worry about

I read there have been, (non-fatal), cases in Texas where my brother lives, and even though I know Texas is HUGE I am worried. Even more worried since dh pointed out that all it takes is for someone infected to travel on a plane, (we live near Gatwick). He was joking but I know I will worry about it now.

Report
AmazingMabel · 25/04/2009 22:13

merlin, why would he be joking? It's true. It probably arived at Heathrow/Gatwick this morning.
