I was reading that

DS was very ill with herpes virus when he was 11 months old, the thought of it in a newborn is horrible

How utterly awful. Since it was the mother's first ever coldsore I can't help wonder if she picked it up in the maternity unit?

Does anyone know whether antiseptec wipes and handgels provide any protection against virus's like this?

I also never knew this, how awful for the parents.

I have never had a coldsore, and i never knew they could be so serious.

Blimey. That's so shocking and so sad. I've just been feeling grumpy because my baby is a bad sleeper and now I couldn't give a monkeys. She can wake me as many times as she likes.

Is there anything else common like this we should know?

The kind of thing which sounds like it should be so rare but obviously isn't. There should be more awareness raised about this. How terribly sad

That's terrible, poor parents such a lovely baby

Report
LaSpooky · 28/10/2008 15:11

Charlee - I think the problem was because the mother had never had a cold sore before and so had no immunity to pass to her baby during pregnancy or bf.

"you do not pass immunity to herpes viruses. "

even while breastfeeding? Because the article suggests otherwise

Agree that the article suggested otherwise - not just breastfeeding but also during pregnancy.
