This story is just so sad.

Jail for nappy death rash mother}

...and now she's pregnant again!! Words just fail me. Why do people get such light sentences for child abuse?

Will she be allowed to keep the child she is expecting? Surely it will go to foster parents until she is assessed as fit to care for a child. One year for the life of a baby seems incredibly lenient. Stories like this leave me disillusioned

Child abuse cases always upset me but this one particularly affected me because her little girl was 3 months when she died, the same age as my DS now.

HappyMumof2 I don't think you're being harsh all - I agree with you.

What a horrible case.

Nope, with ya completely onn sterilising.

Please tell me that she won't be allowed to keep the child - or will social services put her on a nice useless "at risk" list?

One year is far too lenient IM not so humble O!

Really wish child abuse cases were treated more seriously.

Poor little mite, I dread to think how she suffered after seeing how much pain my dd2 went through with slight nappy rash.

I really do hope that they take the other child off her when it is born, she shouldn't be allowed to have children.

Why is it people who are so obviously incapable of looking after children get away with hurting and abusing their children?

why is our justice system so c*

stories like this make me lose faith that there is any justice, and there certainly wasn't for that poor baby

suzywong · 08/03/2005 14:43

oh good, someone else has been brave enough to raise the sterilisation issue, my first instinct is to say snip her tubes, but then eugenics is a very very dangerous power to be handed to a State.

Just make sure she is watched like a hawk when that second baby is born and give her the option to give the baby up for adoption

angelmama72 · 08/03/2005 14:44

im sure she gets to keep the new baby too
the justice system doesnt think about the baby in all this, its so unfair.

How is it no one was intervening with the care of this child in the first place with the mum being a heroin addict?

This makes me sooooo
Nasty piece of work, the baby liked sitting in it's own sht!!!! What the f*k!

Poor poor little baby, my daughter has suffered really badly with nappy rash and it's only mild, and I really feel for her, what that poor child must have went through is unimaginable!

hello iv just been readin what uv said cos iv not seen it on tv god its bad . yes they should take this baby away from her whats this world comin to

I can't believe they only gave her one year. She should not be allowed to keep the baby. Having seen the DVD that Bunglie was sending out about all the women accused of having Munchausens by proxy and having their children taken away from them its seems crazy that this women gets to keep her child having so wilfully neglected her little girl

What i'd be interested to know is how exactly did the NHS staff try to contact her? Did they just try calling her or did they actually visit her? If the child was on the CPR, why weren't the Police involved when the mother was uncontactable.

Poor little baby, I hope she rest in peace tears

But she was being seen by social workers, wasn't she?

I can't understand why someone who has neglected one baby to death would be allowed to keep another. Especially if they are still using heroine.

My views have become much more definite since watching the heroine-user-mother on that Social Work fly-on-wall documentary, watching her lie about both heroine use and alcohol. If you are out of control - i.e within the control of an addiction which effects every judgement and decision you make, you shouldn't have responsibility for a small vulnerable life.

This is a horrible case. I know of someone who had two children taken away from her and were adopted. A few years later and heavily into heroine she became pregnant again they let her keep the baby!!! They say the best thing for the child is to be with their mother where at all possible oh and they get given benifits, flats and grants to buy furniture. Usually all in the same area and around the same people they were with before its a vicous circle when will they ever learn!!!!!

This is disgusting. As far as I am concerned, those found guilty of abusing a child should forfeit all rights to be a parent at any time in the future - we should sterilise 'em all.

Janos · 08/03/2005 15:31

I agree that she shouldn't be allowed to keep her child, she is obviously in no fit state, mentally or physically, to be caring for a baby..and this is from a hand wringing, left-wing Guardian reading type!

I would hope that her child is at the very least fostered to give him or her the best start in life.

Me too Janos but when there's a baby's life at stake. Really and at this story. Can't believe she only got sentenced for 1 year -why was it only neglect and not manslaughter?

Report
Sponge · 08/03/2005 15:34

I don't quite see why social services are cleared either. OK they contacted them lots of times but if she was already on an at risk register before she was 3 months shouldn't there have been more direct contact and checking. It wouldn't have taken a genius to see she was suffering before it came to this.
And of course take the new baby way and give it to a caring family for adoption, and sterilise the mother.
Sorry, going to go away and cry now.

first off, as a mother; this story breaks my heart because when i see ds in any sort of discomfort i ache. may that little one rest safely now.

secondly, as a (/n angry) human, this f**ks me off. more than that. and she is having another?! i hope (HOPE) that whoever is in charge of child welfare does not allow her to have this child, when there are so many families willing to adopt. .... 1 year is a pathetic sentence, absolutely pathetic. she was shown sympathy when she should not have been shown anything but exactly what she showed and gave her little girl....

This is really, really sad. I can't believe any baby especially a 3 month old would like having a dirty nappy. Probably didn't like the changing part - like everybody elses then. How terrible to think she is pregnant again as well.
