Sad news. Babette was such an original artist and author. Princess Smarty pants is one of the greatest books for children. RIP Babette.

Oh I love Princess Smartypants! Sad

So sad, we loved her books, especially the Hairy Book and Mummy Laid an Egg. I looked at photos of her and she looked exactly how I'd pictured her. Can recommend all her books, they're great fun.

Oh I didn't know Sad

Very sad - I only heard that today too. Seems it only made the local BBC news Sad

Going by the obits, she was as crazy as her books. (And she just married someone half her age.)

Weepatchesoflove · 17/01/2017 19:30

That is sad, she was so young. We loved her books, making story time that wee bit easier when you enjoy the story as well and the "just a bit more" especially with the hairy/smelly/slimy books was generally always granted.
With blue in recommending her books.

I went for a job interview with her years ago as a groom, she was really into horses. Lovely lady and delightfully mad. Potty about her animals.

We love her books too. What a sad loss. RIP.

Did she have an Irish Wolfhound, WellErr? It looks as if she did in the short pieces about her on the news. She was a brilliant writer and illustrator, and a real character.

Ah, that is sad. Such a wonderful, original talent.

I used to work in the publishing house that published her books. She would swagger in and speak in a very high pitched voice. Babette gave me advice on how to treat my (then) boss - Tom Maschler who was the Publisher in Chief of Jonathan Cape. 'You have to treat Tom like a naughty horse!' she would squeak.

While I was there, we published her book, Two of Everything, about divorce, written for small children. She was an amazing writer/illustrator. RIP

Aww I've just seen this - she was my best friend's cousin - unfortunately my friend passed away last year, but she told me all about the wonderful character she was Sad

VanillaSugar · 23/01/2017 09:57

Saggingninja - I was her publicist at Reed/Egmont. Mad as a box of frogs, but we ALL absolutely adored her. She was ecstatic when one of her horses was chosen to take part in the Horse of the Year Show. She still sent me Christmas cards even after I left Sad
