Just been reading this Sad. Is Italy prone to earthquakes Amalfi? Been a tragic year, this year.

Apparently you could feel it here too, although this time I didn't feel anything. Looks awful though. Shock The worst thing is living on tenterhooks for months not knowing when or if it is going to happen again.

I hope this one doesn't have a high toll like the last one. Thoughts to all out there.

Thickandthin - yes Italy is on the plate boundary where Africa is slowly crashing into Europe.

felt pretty strong here in Rome. Stronger than the last few

Good to hear you are safe Bananagio.

We are about 5 hours away from Perugia and thankfully didn't feel anything. The solid rocky nature of this region works in our favor, I think.

I lived through a 7.6 earthquake in the middle of the night where ~ 20,000 people died & so am terrified of earthquakes now Sad

Through

Yes.

The risk varies depending on where you live. Here's a map. Which appears to have been updated, cos I used to be in a white zone, and am now pale green. Mind you, we'd only been in this house three days when the sound of a huge truck approaching and then hitting the house happened. Except it wasn't a truck. Just a rather large jolt from the earth. My second earthquake here, in a non earthquake prone area. In the first one I was high up in a tall office building in Milan. Sat on a chair fitted with castors.

I would hate to find out what it feels/sounds like in the red/purple zones. Cos it is terrifying enough in the odd small one you get in the (formerly) white zone.

7.1 is a big one.

Stay safe.

That's two in the space of a week or so, and some others not long before that.

If this was a bigger one, I really hope that's it with the grumble and it stays steady now.

Is your home up to spec anti seismically ?

We felt it here as well , it was a long one , and we are way up NOrth - according to the map still in a green zone ...thank god. It seems and hope it remains so that the areas most affected were by majority evacuated since Oct26 and a mayor of one region said that he hoped the hard headed people - I presume those who had opted to stay in their homes were ok and not burried. I have been thinking thank heavens as this one was much more powerful and for sure it would have killed more people. I cannot and I do not ever wish to feel what it would be like to be nearer as being this far away is scary enough... The room was rocking almost .

Rosa, immagine a line going north to south through the centre of the country, are you on the west side of that line ?

I'm on the east side, south of Milan, still in Lombardia. Felt nothing. Either cos there was nothing to be felt in this area, or cos I was so tired my sleep was coma like.

I have no idea. We have only just moved in. It's a 1960s block.

Have a chat with the older neighbours. They'll remember the big bill to bring the structure up to spec.

If you want further assurance, phone the administrator that manages the condominium. They should be able to tell you what the state of play is. Eventually.

Rosa

I just got east and west the wrong way round. OK, so you are east and I am west of the north to south line. Sounds like your side of the country felt it from North to South. Which is a hell of a long way.

I'm waiting for DH and DS to come back from his basketball match, then I'll find out if anybody over here felt anything. But I think probably not, cos I am a "fuck the ground is moving" phobe and can't immagine sleeping through a notable wobble. I can't even sleep through the cat making the bed shake with her purring.

Report
allegretto · 30/10/2016 09:24

Thanks! Although not sure I want to know - we can't afford to move again!

Report
Rosa · 30/10/2016 09:30

DH says we feel it as we are not on 'solid ground' underneath as it is wood driven into mud basically. and hence we feel more of a wave motion . The DDs did not feel this one as they were moving , dd1 noted about a minute after that the lamp was waving. The one on the 26th they felt as they were in bed . There is a legge about all builds after a certain time being anti sismic but there are too many horror stories out there to believe it or not. I bloody hope thats it now for the big ones but they do seem to be getting more frequent now big ones every couple of years .. And the Aquilla people some are still without homes....

"underneath as it is wood driven into mud basically. "

Rosa, I don't mean to scare you (well I do, a little) but I would make plans to move from that house as soon as possible.

That is the absolute worst location for a house in an earthquake zone.

Anyone in Florence and felt, or didn't feel it?
Flowers and Brew to all.

Report
Rosa · 30/10/2016 09:41

Cote not a chance but actually they say that the lagoon is more protective in some cases as it allows for some movement plus we are all lots of islands not one 'rigido base' , And we are still in green according to the map ... Apparently when the big one happened in Fruili it was felt here but not as bad as those in the centre. WHat we can't plan is a big open space to go to if anything big happens as its too far away.
