Bloke from Eggheads arrested for murdering someone 20 years ago.

Anyone else read this?

Apparantly he lived in Amsterdam many years ago and a homeless person attacked him. He says he thumped him and he fell in a canal and possibly died. He kept quiet about it at the time but has now confessed all in his autobiography. So has been arrested!

So I'm thinking its all a load of bollocks and he was trying to make his book sound interesting. Or it happened. The police apparantly pulled 12 bodies out the canals that year so are trying to work out which body it is he killed.

If it was true why on earth confess to it in a book? Surely he would have thought the police would be interested?

I guess he will just tell the police he made it up and with no witness, no specific body and no forensics they won't have a hope in hell of making anything stick. It's all very odd.

How is it murder to hit someone who is attacking you?

The whole thing is so weird isn't it

I guess he put it in a tell-all book because there's not much else to tell....

Well if I was getting mugged by someone and punched them in self defence and threw them in a canal I would think yes, it's self defence. The difference is I would run round screaming for help once the person was in the canal. I would tell the police what had happened.

He appears to have sauntered off.

Not bothering to get help for some dick who attacked you isn't murder.

If it was me DoIt I'd let the courts decide what his punishment should be, not leave him to die

Punching someone who attacks you is self defence, pushing them into a canal and leaving them to drown most definitely is not.

I do wonder at the kind of person who would do that and then nonchalantly write about it in book 20 years later.

He's such a twat, CJ

Presumably he's bragged about it in his book and whether it's true or not, is wishing he hadn't. I thought he was supposed to be clever?!

CJ is a murderer? And told everyone in a book?

Twat. I always thought his eyes were too close together

At the least its manslaughter and in Amsterdam it may be murder.

Some countries require you, legally, to come to the aid of someone who may die or be seriously injured and in need of your help. The Netherlands may be such a country, in which case it may be murder.

DoinItFine · 23/09/2016 17:27

It still can't be murder if you fail to help someone.

It might be manslaughter, or it might be nothing to do with you.

If the man fell into the canal and wasn't pushed, then CJ can only be blamed for not raising the alarm.

Falling into a canal in the dark when there is nobodyvaround to quickly get you out is probably going to mean you drown.

So he didn't tell the police a man who attacked him, and to whom he owed nothing, probably drowned.

Big deal.

That was my first thought too, that he made it all up..

Cj said in his book that he punched him and then threw him in the canal.

So I suppose police may think the throwing him in the canal was over the top. CJ will no doubt argue it was still self defence. The police may well think they only have CJs word for it that he was being mugged. At the least the police are going to want to have a serious talk/interview with him to find out what happened according to him.

Oh I thought you said the man fell into the canal after being punched.

The police may well think they only have CJs word for it that he was being mugged.

They only have CJ's word for it that there was a tramp. Grin

They don't even have a victim.

Still pretty despicable though, no?

I doubt it happened at all , he's an odious little man who probably needed something to make his book slightly interesting .

Report
DoinItFine · 23/09/2016 17:54

I don't think it's especially despicable.

Maybe he was traumatised after the assault?

Report
emotionsecho · 23/09/2016 18:56

Really DoinItFine? You think it's perfectly acceptable behaviour to throw someone in a canal, leave them to drown and they were possibly traumatised by the assault?

CJ was clearly not that badly injured as he managed to walk away with not so much as a backward glance or thought.

Do you really think that someone dying is a proportionate punishment for an attempted mugging?

He has always been an attention seeking idiot. He made a big song and dance about strictly come dancing last year. Complained that they turned him down after he said he would only dance with another man. Which was odd as SCD said publicly that he was never asked in the first place. Grin

He may find that telling this particular bizzare story has backfired somewhat...

DoinItFine · 23/09/2016 19:33

I said I didn't think it was "despicable" not to help someome who fell into canal, if they had just assaulted you.

There is a big gap between "perfectly acceptable" and despicable.

I would put that somewhere on the "shady" spectrum. With many factors determining the precise depth of shadiness.
