I'm confused, though I'm no plane expert.

How can a passenger on an Embraer 175 look out of the window of the plane and see that one of the tyres has burst? Surely they are out of sight from the plane?

From some seats on those planes you can see the wheels when they are down. It would have been possible to see the burst tyre.

There are pressure sensors in the tyres and the crew might well have seen it. The cabin crew have no access to the sensors though.

The fact the gear hadn't been retracted does suggest the flight crew were aware and were probably deciding on the course of action.

The photo halfway down the BBC story is taken through the window by a passenger on the plane while it's in flight. Assuming flybe haven't discovered some new money-making ruse I think he was probably in it Grin

They aren't in a very different position from on the Dash-8

Actually it is a Dash 8 isn't it? Which would be why it looks like one.

Which is not the plane with the burst tyre in the BBC story.

The plane with the burst tyre that landed at Birminghm was a Dash-8 not an Embraer, which explains why the passengers could see the tyre.
