I kick myself for not paying attention to it. Should have guessed that, could have possibly won some money at the bookies by backing it a few weeks ago.

ProfessorPreciseaBug Sun 15-May-16 08:03:10

Was it a setup?
Is the whole thing an expression of European solidarity?

If so why didn't we win ... or at least come a very close second if all of Europe wants us to stay? Or perhaps they don't want us,, just our money?

var123 Sun 15-May-16 08:08:01

Australia nearly won. Australia in Eurovision!

That'll be fun next year when everyone has to go to Kiev (or is it called Kyiv?) next year.

Kelandry Sun 15-May-16 08:19:00

Yes professor, I thought that at least ONCE Europe would try to play nice considering they apparently want us to stay!? Guess they really only want us for our money, there's no love there.

MardyBra Sun 15-May-16 08:21:10

Nice spoiler for those who haven't watched it yet.

MardyBra Sun 15-May-16 08:21:49

I mean, fair enough to mention it in the thread, but in the title?

LunaLoveg00d Sun 15-May-16 08:23:13

Australia were robbed. Didn't rate the Ukrainian song at all. Quite liked Belgium.

I don't think you should read too much into the whole politics of the thing, it's just a cheesy singing show which very few people take seriously.

Lweji Sun 15-May-16 08:24:44

It must be all over the news now!

Not that I knew. I just don't care, buy my cleaner is Ukrainian, so I'll congratulate her.

I wonder if it was kind of a fuck off message to Russia.
Did it deserve?

claig Sun 15-May-16 08:37:23

I think it is political, as it probably was when Austria won etc. There is probably a team of teenage wonks who decide based on the agenda.

'If so why didn't we win ... or at least come a very close second if all of Europe wants us to stay? Or perhaps they don't want us,, just our money?'

Good question. The wonks probably think that we will vote to stay in so that there was no point and that a greater political point should be made.

Apparently Russia was most offended by the lyrics of the Ukraine song this week. It was about Stalin's the deportation of Crimean tatars (whatever they are!) to Russia in 1944, and about how Russia annexed Crimea at that time.

Maybe that's why it won?

Lweji Sun 15-May-16 08:42:38

God, I've just realised who you were from the "teenage wonks" as I didn't pay attention to the OP's name. grin

Anyway, Eurovision has nothing to do with the EU. And I think only very silly people would vote out of the EU based on a silly song contest

NoahVale Sun 15-May-16 08:43:38

but of course the Ukraine didnt vote for themselves.
and Russia had the most public votes.

var123 Sun 15-May-16 08:44:13

What are these "wonks" you speak of, claig? Its all over your Trump posts too. You use it in such a derogatory way but when I googled it, it just means studious and hardworking. Is that such a bad thing?

claig Sun 15-May-16 08:45:52

I didn't watch it, but in the days leading up to it , the wonks in the media were bigging up the Russian entry and saying that it might win etc, there was even footage of an interview with the Russian singer, and then shock surprise (wonk laughter), Ukraine won.

var123 Sun 15-May-16 08:46:40

At the beginning the presenters said something about how Eurovision was established in the 50s to help heal the wounds of the war, and now Europe is in such turmoil again.
(I don't think they said "turmoil" - just something bad).

What were they referring to, exactly?

var123 Sun 15-May-16 08:47:14

and again you say wonks. What do you mean?

Lweji Sun 15-May-16 08:47:50

There are many countries around Europe who resent the Iron Curtain, plus the rest who don't appreciate what Russia is doing with the Ukraine and Syria, plus how it's constantly pushing boundaries with NATO countries.
This win shows support to the Ukraine and can be seen as a white glove slap to Russia.

Or most voters have dubious taste?

NoahVale Sun 15-May-16 08:49:26

but the public votes put Russia at number one, if you had ignored the jury votes russia would have won. not a slap in the face to Russia at all

claig Sun 15-May-16 08:50:31

Wonks are the political wonks from Oxbridge etc, the ones who are fastrtacked up the MP ladder and act as SPADs etc. Usually the more teenage the better, the less real-life job experience the better. Ideally a wonk is taken straight out of Oxbridge and parachuted into a position to spin the people.

The term is American informal for a studious or hardworking person but is mainly used in the UK for "policy wonks", the geeks and nerds straight out of Oxbridge, usually teenage, who end up in politics at the highest levels and lecture and spin the public. There are usually "teams" of them that work together to perform acts of spin. They are invariably teenage.

Lweji Sun 15-May-16 08:50:59

I didn't watch it, so which public vote?
But it's the jury's vote that can more easily be politically manipulated is it not?

NoahVale Sun 15-May-16 08:52:03

a jury voted after the rehearsal, 50% of their votes counted

NoahVale Sun 15-May-16 08:52:25

the public were voting via televote

claig Sun 15-May-16 08:59:08

'if you had ignored the jury votes russia would have won. not a slap in the face to Russia at all'

That is probably even more of a slap in the face. The media building Russia up, the public putting them in the lead and then probably a phone call to the wonks, to pull the plug. Laughter all around, highfiving in Brussels. Classic wonkery.

var123 Sun 15-May-16 09:03:02

ok. Thanks. Its a political geek like Ed Miliband probably was?

You think they are controlling Eurovision now? TBH I thought it was just people with a dubious taste in music who controlled eurovision! The voting is obviously political but more support the downtrodden or your neighbours political than deep thinking.

What's clear to me, is that we are not liked in Europe both by the man in the street and by the political classes. That's fair enough. We can always vote out and leave them to get on with ruining their economies.

claig Sun 15-May-16 09:03:31

'At the beginning the presenters said something about how Eurovision was established in the 50s to help heal the wounds of the war, and now Europe is in such turmoil again.

Interesting. Don't forget, all of these things are about "spin", so the hand of a wonk is ever present.

Clearly Europe is in "turmoil" because of the migrant crisis, the rise of populism and the Brexit referendum which could all end the wonks' masters plan, howver, that is not what the "spin" was getting at because they mentioned "the wounds of war" and that is probably why Ukraine won and Russia didn't.

The agenda is to fearmonger about war with Russia.
