Mass shooting in my state

Another mass shooting in the US and this one is close to home. Local media are saying 13 students dead and 20+ injured. When are people going to see sense on gun control. I just don't understand this.

It must be scary when it happens in your state, Terramirabilis (although as Oregon is huge I guess it could be many miles from where you are).

At this stage it is unimaginable what might eventually get Americans to lay down their weapons.

KnockMeDown · 01/10/2015 21:40

It's like a nightmare version of ground hog day - when I read about this I thought Oh no, not again, but there is a horrible sense of inevitability - when and where will it happen again, not if Sad

tribpot · 01/10/2015 21:49

What I find bewildering is the fact that the evidence is obvious. If you ban guns you have virtually no gun deaths. Not none - you still get people like Anders Breivik even in the most peaceful country. But compared to the US, essentially none. Yet even something as basic as banning the high velocity weapons that can kill many, many people very quickly and without any significant skill by the killer is impossible.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 01/10/2015 22:02

Sad 'Oh no, there's been another mass shooting in America' - my exact words when I read about this. My son's words, 'oh no, how many did they kill?'

It's the utter weary acceptance of these shootings now.

Thanks Prayers to those affected.

Terramirabilis · 01/10/2015 22:15

It's exhausting, yes. It makes me scared to be raising DS here. All kids get trained on what to do in event of a shooting from kindergarten up.

I remember seeing a video the classroom lockdown practice after Sandy Hook. It's so sad that kids have to learn about that stuff so young.

AskBasil · 01/10/2015 22:22

It's horrific that it's become so normal Sad

squidzin · 01/10/2015 22:41

It's the 45th school shooting this year.

squidzin · 01/10/2015 22:46

I haven't read up on all the details of this case, but it seems common that these massacre teenagers don't own their own gun but take their mums or whoever.

It should at least be illegal at the very least, if your own gun is used for mass murder by someone else, if you haven't taken precautions to lock your gun away, you should be sentenced. You are enabling murder.

squidzin · 01/10/2015 22:48

I have family in America. They are all very anti gun. Just don't understand it.

HearTheThunderRoar · 01/10/2015 23:18

Absolutely devastating, it's almost like a regular occurrence.

We were in Boston at the end of last year and there was in electronic sign above a freeway saying 60 000 people had been killed from guns since Sandy Hook. Was a real eye opener.

tribpot · 01/10/2015 23:29

There's been a mass shooting nearly every day this year.

DolphinsPlayground · 01/10/2015 23:46

Scary.

What is even more scary is that even with tighter gun controls, how do you stem the tide of 3d gun printing when people just really really want, or think they need, to own guns? The right to gun ownership is entrenched in the society. They could change the gun ownership laws but 3d printing could counter all of that. And not just in America. (Sorry slight tangent, but was watching a video on 3d printing that raised this issue with ds earlier)

PatrickPolarBear · 02/10/2015 00:45

Totally agree, squidz. The owner of the weapon should be made to account for its use and prosecuted if they have been found to not have stored their guns securely. With all rights come responsibilities but here in the US there is endless talk about gun 'rights' and almost nothing about gun responsibility.

I've been to Roseburg. It seemed to be a pretty isolated mountain town, not much in the way of jobs as far as I could see. It is tragic but what's worse is all the media coverage. It just promotes this kind of stunt to the kids with a sick mindset and there is too much focus on the 'gunman', never enough on the victims.

SellMySoulForSomeSleep · 02/10/2015 00:59

What I'll never understand is all the people who still defend their right to have guns.

Would the only way for them to change their mind is for a loved one of theirs to be shot dead? Would that even sway them?

Quite a few people close to me are gun owners because of their jobs but nobody else would ever be able to get hold of them.
The UK has its faults but they've got gun laws right.

tribpot · 02/10/2015 07:16

Would the only way for them to change their mind is for a loved one of theirs to be shot dead? Would that even sway them?

No - the counter argument for that still seems to be that if the loved one had been armed (or better armed) he/she wouldn't have died.

I suppose on a more practical note, and thinking of the 3D printing question, how do they get from where they are to where (for example) we are in terms of gun ownership and prevalence? If they ask everyone to hand in their weapons, let's say 95% do that. The next ten mass shootings will happen and the country will be - pun intended - up in arms about how many more people have died because they were unable to defend themselves (however unlikely this is to be correct, most people cannot fire a weapon accurately under pressure).

But that just brings me round to the automatic weapons argument. Even if you think carrying a pistol is a reasonable idea in 2015 (it clearly isn't) no-one needs to own an assault rifle.

tribpot · 02/10/2015 07:26

I see Obama's getting to the point where he just wants to stand up and say 'of course this fucking happened again, your bastard politicians are too afraid to change the law' (Exasperated Obama here). And no doubt he will be heavily criticised for 'politicising' the tragedy aka pointing out that there is a simple, numerical relationship between the availability of guns and the number of gun deaths.

Kampeki · 02/10/2015 07:32

What worries me is that I no longer feel shocked about such incidents. When I heard the news yesterday, I just thought "not again!".

I find it utterly incomprehensible that the American people allow this to continue.

Sapele · 02/10/2015 07:51

How do you get rid of all the guns? Even starting now would take YEARS and then those who wanted them would still keep them.

Isn't it too late?

gingerdad · 02/10/2015 08:00

I worked on a scout camp in the states for a summer and it amazed me you couldn't Repel/ Abseil till you where 15. But you could shoot - rifles, shot guns and old fashioned black power guns from 8.

The other mad thing is the lobby shouting lets arm teachers / or put armed guards in the school is also getting louder. Cause obviously by introducing more guns it'll be safer- nutters

NinjaLeprechaun · 02/10/2015 10:16

"It must be scary when it happens in your state, Terramirabilis (although as Oregon is huge I guess it could be many miles from where you are)."
Oh God. I'm in Oregon, my daughter goes to community college and was in class as I read the headline "shooting at an Oregon community college campus" - and I'm fairly certain my heart stopped for a moment before I saw that it wasn't her school. Many miles away is still much too close.

I don't think the biggest problem is guns themselves, although I'm certainly not in favour of unfettered access, it's that apparently killing people is seen as an acceptable solution to... something. That's a problem that runs much deeper than anything that has a political solution.
It's just so horribly sad.

LurkingHusband · 02/10/2015 11:15

How do you get rid of all the guns?

Stop making ammunition for them ?

LurkingHusband · 02/10/2015 11:21

Well since these events have been going on the better part of 50 years, it's hard not to draw the conclusions that - despite the handwringing and wailing - it's a state of affairs most (voting) US citizens are happy with.

If you can't solve a problem everyone says needs solving in 50 years, it's probably a good indicator you will never solve it. After all, what is so more awful about this attack, when compared with the last one ?

MischiefInTheWind · 02/10/2015 11:40

More guns in the hands of frightened people, more collateral damage.
The shooter may end up dead, but so will a lot of others.

Arkkorox · 02/10/2015 11:44

Has anyone else seen the 4chan forum thread linked to this? Allegedly the gunman posted to tell people what he was doing. There were a lot of people encouraging him Sad
