Can't believe TfL thought this was a good idea. For all sorts of reasons I can't quite articulate right now.

When I was younger, it was common to ask someone going home late at night to ring, so you knew they were back safely (and so someone would check if no call made). I would have just assumed that using social media was the updated version.

That was the days of the Yorkshire Ripper, and I think those of us who lived through that will always take a stance on personal safety that is markedly different from later generations.

We used to phone, let it ring 3 times and then hang up so we didn't have to pay for the call and the other person didn't have to rush for the phone but would still know we were safe Obviously if it rang more than the pre-arranged number of times they would answer in case the caller was in trouble). So I agree this isn't a new thing.

On the other hand the article in the link does raise a valid point that technology is different and could possibly alert potential attackers to the fact that a vulnerable person is at home and even where they are. Surely it's a bit like announcing to all and sundry that you will be going away on holiday leaving your house ripe for a spot of burglary.

My friends and I would always text to let each other know we were home safe

I still ask friends and family to let me know they are home if they have a long journey or coming back from holiday. Selfie is a bit ridiculous but the concept of letting people know you are ok is hardly new

My friends and I will text once we're home (only if it's early hours type time) but I think that's very different to posting a selfie on a social networking site. Totally agree with the article on a) we shouldn't have to b) it shouldn't be aimed mainly at women and c) saying I've been out drinking and now I'm home, very possibly alone when often our whereabouts is tagged rather just texting one friend isn't necessarily a good idea
