The flight mh17 from Amsterdam to kuala lumpor with 295 people on board, it was a boing 777.
It was shot down with a buk ground to air missile.
They say there are no survivors.

It's awful.

That's absolutely terrible. Poor people on board.

tribpot · 17/07/2014 16:42

The Beeb isn't reporting that it was shot down (it's not reporting that it wasn't but you know what I mean).

A dreadful situation either way, I hope it's not as bad as it appears. When the plane crashed in San Francisco last year early reports suggested many more fatalities than there ultimately were.

SwedishEdith · 17/07/2014 16:42

Started a thread as well on this. It's horrific. I was only thinking about the other plane earlier and that it might have been shot down.
I watched a documentary about the Air France crash last night - so upsetting listening to the pilots final conversation

SublimeCorpse · 17/07/2014 16:43

just watching sky news coverage now - its awful Sad

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 17/07/2014 16:43

They are saying that it was only flying at an altitude of 10k, and it's likely that it was not recognised and they panicked and shot it down by mistake.

It was 50 miles from the Russian border.

Local Ukrainian media are reporting that there is nothing but burning wreckage left.

BBC 6music news says shot down

tribpot · 17/07/2014 16:45

Beeb quotes an unnamed aviation source saying the plane was at 30,000 feet in an international airspace corridor when it descended rapidly and crashed.

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 16:46

Great minds sweedish.

It's so horrific.

Malaysian airlines have confirmed that they have lost contact with the flight and that it never entered Russian air space.

BBC live updates here

Tournesol · 17/07/2014 16:50

Just reading on the Guardian. It seems the reason they are speculating it may have been shot down is because separatists shot down a Ukrainian plane earlier in the day.

So awful.

That's horrific. Makes you wonder why they didn't have a no fly zone over air space there though. They do in other troubled zones.

AuntieStella · 17/07/2014 16:52

Interfax is saying shot down.

And clearly something caused the plane to crash (close to Ukraine/Russia border). But is it still possible there was a bomb or some other catastrophic event?

tribpot · 17/07/2014 16:52

The Beeb's just reported:

16:50: An advisor to the Ukrainian interior minister, Anton Gerashenko, says the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 metres (33,000 feet) when it was "hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher", in a post on his Facebook page, according to the Associated Press.

On his Facebook page??

AuntieStella · 17/07/2014 16:56

Lots of speculation, emerging from all sorts of people on all sorts of platforms.

280 passengers, 15 crew Sad

MerdeAlor · 17/07/2014 16:58

Sky are confirmed it was shot down. The interfax agency say it was shot down by a ground to air missile.

Isn't Interfax Russian though?

AnyaKnowIt · 17/07/2014 16:59

Oh my Sad

WeAreEternal · 17/07/2014 17:01

Is it suspicious or just a horrible coincidence that Malaysian airlines have lost two Boeing 777s within a few months of one another?

Interfax is a Russian non?governmental news agency based in Moscow. The agency was established in 1989 by officials from the international service, Moscow Radio. Wikipedia
