I just heard about this on the radio. They are searching the sea between Malaysia and Vietnam.

Surely they have a tracker?

Two passports seem to have been stolen and used to board the plane. That doesn't seem good.

There still doesn't seem to be any further on this. It's not looking good Sad
Surely if there had been stolen passports and it was linked to terrorism, the group responsible would have spoken out by now?
It would seem that it really has just disappeared in to the sea.

Well something sudden and catastrophic must have happened in flight, given that no Mayday call and all those passengers had mobiles but no calls made.......must have been instant

In a strange way I almost wish that it had been hijacked and the passengers are safe rather than an explosion . However by now the plane should have landed somewhere .......It is all very strange . With the Air France explosion they found wreckage in the same time scale.

No news this morning? It seems a bit weird that there's nothing.

I was really expecting news by now!

Report
PinkLemons · 09/03/2014 08:26

I agree that it must have been sudden. If the plane had been hijacked then surely someone would have had chance to send a text or make a call? Surely there would have been chance for the pilot to raise some sort of alarm.

My thoughts are that it must have simply exploded without any warning but I have no idea how that would happen.

I always thought terrorists were quite proud of their work and would be claiming responsibility by now.

I'd have expected a terrorist attack to be followed by an announcement by the group responsible.
It could just be a horrible accident.
RIP all those on board.

I'm in Vietnam and have been following this.

Authorities believe the plane could have turned back and have expanded the search area.

A pilot from a different plane contacted the plane asking if it had en

why announce aobut the fake passports?
if they know that, why did they let them on?
do people often travel with fake passports?

Been watching this with deep concern from Malaysia. Have a friend who flies for MAS and yesterday was a worry, waiting to be told he is OK. But the whole thing is awful, and quite frightening.

No-one knows what's going on. It is very strange to be in Malaysia right now, with water rationing, dangerous haze levels, now this. :(

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/03/2014 15:26

They didn't know the passports were fake and let them on. They realised that two of the people on the flight were on the ground walking around. The two had had their passports stolen in Thailand. That was from yesterday so I've no idea if it is correct.

Oh, Loopy.... :(

I read in the Straits Times that the two imposters were traveling together and bought their tickets in Pattaya.

This is still so so weird, and tragic for the people waiting for news of loved ones :(

There's a more active thread in "chat" about this.

There was a news conference today; the search is still going on, and has been expanded to cover the areas to the west of Malaysia where the plane might have been if it had turned back.

There is no official information on who the false passport passengers might have been, but at least one was of non-Asian appearance and it seems they went through normal check in and security (ruling out collusion by airport staff?). There was mention of investigation into a stolen passport syndicate, but no information on what that might mean about the users of stolen passports and the type of crime they could be involved with.

PseudoBadger · 10/03/2014 14:20

Sorry I didn't know there was another thread

Report
meditrina · 10/03/2014 14:28

Unless you catch it in Active Convos, or use chat as your main place for looking at threads, then you wouldn't necessarily see it (and it'll go pfft one day anyhow). There are often multiple threads when something is in the headlines.

PseudoBadger · 10/03/2014 14:31

I had looked through active but obviously never caught it, I was surprised that the thread in here was so quiet.

I thought they could use satellites to spy on you in your back garden... and they can't find aeroplane wreckage??? Weird.
