"He committed a number of sexual offences against his sister between March and May last year but the matters did not come to light until last autumn."

"Sentencing him, District Judge James Prowse said he thought it “highly improbable” that the boy would reoffend in this way as he followed the recommendations of a Youth Offending Team to impose a 12-month referral order.

Detaining him would “tear the family apart” and would expose him to “hardened and sophisticated” youth offenders, he added.

In a victim impact statement, the girl said she was “sad” at what her brother had done but she wanted him to come home because she loved him and missed playing games with him."

"It is understood the boy had viewed porn on an Xbox games console at a friend’s house."

"The content had led to “sexual conversation” between the group of friends, the court heard."

God how awful :(

I agree that surrounding him with others who hae commented equally awful crimes may well not be the answer.

I often wonder though how much we can blame games/tv

I mean characters fly, shoot people, drive cars, beat eachother up , and lots if other things. 12 is old enough to know it's not real. Or people are pretending they arebt all trying to jump off buildings. So maybe something was wrong to start with and this is the first sign.

I feel sorry for both kids really. I hope they all get the love and support needed.

I only feel sorry for the girl.
I don't give a flying fuck about the boy.

I suppose we have to wait several more years of the poor girl or some other girl being abused before he graduates to "sophisticated".

I think the porn is a red herring. Pretty much all boys of this age will see porn at some point and have a 'lack of maturity'. They don't generally go on to rape their sisters.

It seems like this sort of sentence (or lack of it) is fairly standard:

I'm glad in not a judge because I just can't fir the life of me contemplate having to figure out what to do with them.

They need to be punished obviously. But what/how?

They need some kind off support/therapy etc

Is the boy still living in the family home?, I feel that the young girl is simply parroting out what she wants her family to hear.

Surely it is not normal for a 12yo to see porn?
15 yo maybe but 12??
Poor poor girl. I do also feel sorry for the boy.

I agree re the girl parrotting and re the porn being a red herring - its another case of parents standing by an abusive child over and above the needs of a victim.

Although mu heart goes out to the parents too - because its a living hell no parent wants to find themselves in.

Stealth, by 12 Around 50% of children will have seen porn, usually pretty hard stuff and this is growing year on year. 30% of ten year olds have :(

Report
StealthPolarBear · 03/03/2014 17:40

a third of ten year olds?
I am completely shocked.

We'll I'm sure lots of 12 yr olds do. My brother had a magazine stash at around that age. I found it. And my oarebts edge pretty strict with age restrictions I wasbt allowed to watch many things other kids my age watched. I found a way though but I wasn't allowed.

But by 12 he should know it's just film it's just pictures. There must be another reason but god knows what.

sorry and just see you say that by 12 50% have seen porn
Where are you getting this from? This is awful.

Read this and wondered if there would be a thread.
The sister saying she wants him to come home is heart breaking.
How can they all continue to live together, like 'normal' ?
Also, I think the article said it happened over a period of time. So it wasn't a one off. I just don't know how the parents could want them all living together under one roof?

Apparently in 1 study 100% of the Y9 boys in one LA had seen pornography: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9970190/Entire-school-year-groups-have-seen-porn-childrens-watchdog-says.html

Age 12 would be far from unusual.

I was of primary school age when my friend and I found a stash of porn in a hedge. I can remember the images clearly even now.

I think with internet access it must be so easy for children to be exposed to all sorts of dreadful stuff even earlier.

So sad.

A 12 year old watching hardcore porn ? I can only begin to imagine the damage that does to someone that age.

I agree that the innocent victim in this is the young girl and that any punishment has to put her needs first but I also agree that education is needed, not just for the boy involved but the others who were party to viewing hardcore porn.

I have difficulty with it as an adult, god only knows how a child feels after viewing it. I suspect that we've only just begun to see the tip of the iceberg in respect of realising just how much harm porn causes our children.

The boy was 12. Either his parents had failed to speak to him about sex entirely, or they did speak to him about sex but ignored the very important detail of consent.

When you bring up the notion that teaching boys about consent is essential, there are always whines about it "painting all boys as rapists". But obviously, it does need to be taught. So much effort goes into teaching girls how to avoid sexual assault, but so little into teaching boys not to assault women.

Yes, most boys would not go on to become rapists. But some apparently would. We don't expect all girls to be raped but still teach them how to avoid it, why not teach all boys how not to be rapists even if we don't expect that they will be?

That poor little girl has been sadly let down by her family. What an appalling thing to have endured.

Annie thats simply not true. My stepson has been prosecuted for child abuse and I can assure you he knew all about consent. He knew damn well what he was doing was wrong - he just did it anyway.

At her age its to difficult for her to articulate how she might have been effected. I remember the burning desire I felt as a child to please my parents, this was paramount. I would have discarded any upset I felt to make them happy.

Report
StealthPolarBear · 03/03/2014 17:55

I would hope that she is surrounded by experts who are able to cut through that.

Report
WeekendsAreHappyDays · 03/03/2014 17:56

You cant cut through basic child psychology though especially when she is living with them.

Report
StealthPolarBear · 03/03/2014 17:57

All I mean is if people on the internet reading about a case are aware that might be an issue, you'd hope the people involved will also be aware of that.
