The Depths to which the Sugar Pushers Sink - Tesco

We are exhorted to avoid sugar (I don't have any ever other than a bit of fruit). Yet day in day out it is peddled and pushed on to us and our children at home, in schools, by others.

This morning Tesco delivered our weekly shopping. There was an item I had not ordered. It is in front of me now. I asked the delivery man about it. It is a free gift. Guess what it is? Sugar.. or rather an organic rice cake think covered in Belgian chocolate. At Christmas Tesco gave us a large box of sugary biscuits in a tin.

Why don't they give customers carrots or cucumbers? Why just junk food that ruins your health?

I told the driver I did not eat any sugar but perhaps my family might eat it. He took a while to believe me, said he could never manage that and then disclosed that he is diabetic (he didn't look over weight particularly but is of Indian origin and middle aged).

Tescos wont be able to win with this one. Whatever they put in, someone somewhere will complain.

never finish off a lovely meal with a nice chocolate pudding or a creme brulee?

Tesco's delivery give you free stuff?!
I'm not sure I follow why you're surprised that the delivery driver wasn't overweight and was middle aged and Indian..

Poor delivery driver Sad.

Because free gifts are meant to be nice and a treat, not a fucking cucumber.

I'm also thinking why ruin some nice Belgian chocolate with a rice cake!

So you don't ever have added sugar. Bully for you. Give it to a neighbour.

And I fail to see what the delivery driver having diabetes has to do with anything. He could have been type 1 since childhood which has feck all to do with over consumption of sugar.

Have a Biscuit

How do you avoid sugar altogether? Just genuinely curious, and do you feel good for it?

Report
Pagwatch · 07/02/2014 11:13

Say what?

You are complaining about a free gift?

Why don't you accept it with some grace and put it away until your child's school or somesuch need tombola prizes?

Eww. Rice Cakes. Sad

Why did you feel the need to tell him that you don't eat sugar? I'm completely baffled by your last comment. Not all diabetics are overweight or middle aged Indian men.

Still I expect we're all looking forward to receiving a bag of carrots or a couple of cucumbers on Valentine's Day.

I have a friend who doesn't eat sugar. It is so fucking tedious. All the health benefits are cancelled out by the being a PITA if you ask me. Though I am not a diabetic indian man, if that's relevant, which it doesn't appear to be.

Anyway have a Biscuit seeing as we don't have an emoticon for [healthycucumber]

I think if you were given a cucumber you would mistake it as an insult to your sex life Blush - yes extreme poster.

They've never given us Kallo rice cakes, we have to buy them ourselves! This may be why we don't get them free of course.

Chocolate topped rice cakes are gorgeous.

Are they Pagwatch?

Report
Pagwatch · 07/02/2014 11:45

They actually are. Whilst ordinary rice cakes are like old socks.
The combo of chocolate and rice cake was a surprise to me tbh.

I will do a taste test. Smile Perhaps there will be some in my Click and Collect order on Sunday.

PenelopePipPop · 07/02/2014 11:49

They are free - did you consider just throwing the unwanted biscuits in the bin?

That's a free suggestion too.

obviously nothing is actually 'free' as it will be factored into the overall prices at Tesco.

nonetheless
a) this is as entitled as it gets. It gives me great pleasure to award my first Biscuit.
b) fruit contains sugar
c) bet you do eat sugar
d) it is not 'peddled and pushed' You do actually have the power of independent thought and it isn't hard to ignore sales.

I'd better take dd2 back to the hospital and explain that her diagnosis of diabetes is clearly wrong as she isn't of Indian origin or middle aged!!!

What a ridiculous thing to include in your op. anybody can develop diabetes regardless of race/age/weight

Dark chocolate covered rice cakes are scrummy yummy!!

OP do you not eat any veg then? As some veg has natural sugars in.

OMG, you also don't drink alcohol - that is hardcore!!

There was some sciency stuff recently saying (can't link or quote, just what I recall) saying that if we avoided all the processed foods with added sugars that have only recently come into our diets, then having the odd bit of sugar in puddings and cakes (and booze) like we used to in the clearly now golden-era of pre-1970s was just fine.

It's having it in almost everything, and hidden, that's not good.

Mmmmmmm sticky toffee pudding Bit of what you fancy does you good I think.
